Watched Alice in Burtonland a few nights ago. Some nicely inventive touches. I liked the little heart shaped lipstick on the Red Queen, the shrubbery in her image, etc. But some things, such as the Cheshire Cat and Alice's resizings weren't very convincing. Maybe it looks better on a big screen, or when you are wearing goofy glasses, but on home vid, these tricks paled.
The plot is too much of a mish-mash of various Carroll writings. The Mad Hatter ends up at the center of most things for no discernible reason except that he's played by Johnny Depp. Anne Hathaway has little to do as the White Queen. The good guys are underdeveloped.
I liked it in spurts. And was impatient at other times when it felt like a familiar fantasy good v. bad chase/fight film.
It seemed like it could have been much more, but contrariwise, what it is isn't bad, but more muchness could have been better.
Has anyone seen this?
I'd be interested to know if the Cheshire Cat, Bandersnatch and large Alice looked good/decent on the big screen. |

Sometmes bad things happen to bad movies.
From Box Office Guru:
"Expected to be the queens of the holiday box office, the ladies of Sex and the City 2 instead managed just a second place debut taking in an estimated $32.1M over the Friday-to-Sunday span. Warner Bros. opened the R-rated sequel in 3,445 theaters and averaged $9,325 per site which nearly matched the $9,926 average of Shrek which is playing in 922 more locations. Bad word-of-mouth quickly affected the Sarah Jessica Parker franchise flick. Opening day on Thursday fetched $14.2M and sales have fallen every day since. Saturday suffered a disturbing 23% fall from the previous day which was truly disastrous since Friday was not helped by the opening day rush and Saturday was a day off for the audience of adult women.
"Since its Thursday bow, SATC2 has grossed $46.3M and its five-day launch from Thursday to Monday should reach roughly $52M. That means the sequel will gross less in its five-day holiday opening than its 2008 predecessor made in its three-day non-holiday bow. The first Sex debuted to $56.8M on the weekend after Memorial Day and was generally liked by fans who were expected to show up in larger numbers for the new installment. Reviews were horrendous, but franchise films like these usually can still score big bucks from loyal fans. With the road ahead expected to include large declines, City 2 is not likely to come close to the $152.6M of the first film." |

| SatC2 sounds so bad from so many people that my desire to see it increases with every day. Probably won't, but if I do it will be on a weekday afternoon when I'm usually the only one in the theatre so I'll be able to shout at the screen. Could be fun. |

Has anyone heard anything about Nowhere Boy, a film about the young John Lennon?
Apparently not getting a US release until October, but they've been rolling it out elsewhere, so the DVd is here already. Not having heard anything about it, I'm mildly skeptical, my default setting. |

I saw Alice at a 3-d Imax theatre.........same place I saw Avatar. Avatar was astounding there. Alice paled in comparison. I mean......it did look good on the big screen......but compared to the book......not the same feel. Johnny Depp took over and the Queen thing was not the same......no rivalry, no 2 queens.
I hated Sex and the City 2. My friend loved it.....and other women in the theatre seemed to be enjoying themselves. I would think everyone involved would be horribly embarassed to have participated. Especially the 4 women. There was so much staleness in the dialogue and acting and it reflected so poorly on the creative cleverness of the series.
There were so many costume changes it was exhausting. Carrie's married. Can't she hang around in a t-shirt and sweats at home? (I wish they had all gone to Shanghai and worn pajamas ......the same ones all the time.)
This movie was an obnoxious, poorly timed bow to conspicuous consumption. Stupid and sickening. |

| Kites is over-the-top by even Bollywood standards. It's hell of a lot of fun. Full of romance, action, melodrama, music and gorgeous looking actors. |

Gromit: I read about "Nowhere Boy" several months ago in a British newspaper online and have been waiting to hear about it coming here. It sounded excellent.
I'm still waiting for "I Love You Philip Morris" too. Especially since Ewan McGregor intrigued me in "The Ghost Writer." |

| By the way, over the holiday weekend in South Carolina I saw "Shrek Forever After" (again, my mother and sister were the deciders). A very charming and funny film, with the usual beautifully imaginative animation, and a reminder that Antonio Banderas' voice, even coming from a chubby cat, is sexier than the whole bodies of most male movie stars. Maybe he and George Clooney should give seminars together. |

| Two of Marta's favourites also. Banderas is #1 on her list. These Latins stick together. |

If she likes Banderas, she has good taste. But, we already knew that, didn't we? |

| Get Him To The Greek is fun throughout with some gutbustingly funny moments. Sean Combs, Russell Brand and Jonah Hill deliver the laughs and some genuine warmth. A welcome diversion from the oil spill and Israel flotilla massacre. |
