Agree with you on Leaving Las Vegas, although I enjoyed his dual role of Charlie and Donald Kaufman.
I admit to not having seen Matchstick Men. Without spoilers, what's the enjoyable aspect of the movie? |

| Looks like Big Fish was the only movie I've seen Alison Lohman in. Guess I need to check out Matchstick Men, and with it being directed by Ridley Scott, that's another plus. |

| More specifically con man Cage finds out he has a teenage daughter played by Lohman and starts to train her in his profession at her suggestion. The two of them work very well together. |

| As an extra attraction, Cage's partner in con is Sam Rockwell. The movie is delicious in every conceivable way. I own it and have watched it many times. Terrific. |

I happen to have the exact opposite reaction to Con Air (hate it) and The Rock (dig it).
Somehow, my response to Cage has done a complete 180. I used to think he was amazing, now I think he's awful. I see performances I used to love, and I wonder what was wrong with me that I appreciated them.
Which performances are they?
Valley Girl, Moonstruck, Peggy Sue Got Married, Vampire's Kiss, Raising Arizona. Essentially every Cage movie that I've seen and then re-visted years later. |

Cage goes so far, makes such intrigung, iconoclastic acting choices, that they are apt either to score heavily or to land with a tremendous thud. The genius of Werner Herzog's direction of The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans was that he managed to make a performance which in another context could have been a Cage disaster and turn it into a triumph.
Other Cage outings that IMO were magnificent but on that coulda-been-awful edge are Snake Eyes and Vampire's Kiss.
Cage debacles were Peggy Sue Got Married, Deadfall, and what I've seen of The Wicker Man.
Cage can also do excellent "mainstream" acting like Guarding Tess, Adaptation, The Family Man, and The Weather Man. |

It's a twisty, turny, surprising caper flick PLUS a psychological comedy-drama with marvelous performances by Cage, Rockwell, and Lohman. |

Liked Matchstick Men. Didn't love it.
I haven't seen any of the Cage movies that you thought were bad, Billy. See, I'm very good at knowing what movies to avoid. 
The Weatherman, which I saw with Marc up in his screening, (guest bed) room in Taos, was an overlooked movie as far as I can remember. Good movie and Cage was very good. We both liked it. I never sawMoonstruck. SA saw it and hated it. She never mentioned Cage though, it was Cher whom she said was terrible, slipping in and out of an Italian accent among other things.

| I thought Cher was pretty good in Moonstruck though not great and not worthy of the Oscar she won for it. Where she was fantastic was in Mask. A great performance for which she wasn't even nominated. Ridic. |

It's a wonderful movie. Not great, but one of Bogdanovich's best, and a real audience-pleaser with four--count 'em--great perfs by Cher, Eric Stoltz, Sam Elliott, and Laura Dern. A must-see. |
