I'm behind the times. Sita Sings the Blues is now available from Netflix and from Amazon! It apparently became available just within the last few weeks. I'm glad to have my copy from her website. Everyone who hasn't seen it should rent or buy it.
I also noticed a Bill Plympton collection I just had to order.
Paley has six animated shorts from 2000-2001 on her blog. "Fetch" is the only one that's really good. There's one called "Lexi" which uses varius rotoscoping techniques on a videotape of her car running around the house getting into things. It's interesting in a technical sort of way, especially if you're a cat. Two of the other shorts are heavy handed satires on overpopulation ("Stork" is the better), and the other two I didn't finish. She also did several comic strips that are apparently quite good.
I watched Persepolis again the night before and it's as great as I remembered it. There is one lesson in it that is repeated in Sita: Don't piss off your girlfriend when your girlfriend is an animator. |
