I don't know about Depp and Burton. I do know that I'm getting fed up with Michael Jackson, Michael Jackson, Michael Jackson 24/7, and particularly with the attempt to forget all about the negatives and concentrate on the music. This was a really sick man with a really manipulative side that ruined or at least damaged many lives. Yes, he was talented, but enough is enough! |

Billy,
I am so with you on this Michael Jackson thing. It's disgusting. In the same week that a soldier was killed in Iraq, protests in Iran heat back up, unemployment is closing in on 10%, California has gone bankrupt and we up the ante in Afghanistan, CNN turns into the Michael Jackson network.
Jackson ods on a massive pill cocktail, was a fucking junkie, admitted to sleeping with children, an ego maniac that crowned himself the "King Of Pop", was a freak by most definitions of the word, and yet, because he sold a shitload of records and could moonwalk, the press, the world, gives the sick motherfucker a pass. It demonstrates just how low we have sunk as a culture. |

and watching all these parasites jump on the Michael Jackson bandwagon is also disgusting. From Sharpton to Jamie Foxx to Corey fucking Feldman, everybody wants of a piece of Michael's remains. Thank gawd Obama didn't fall all over himself praising the "King Of Pop". |

Thank goodness it will probably be the last we see of celebrity death mania on this scale. I can't imagine another pop star getting this kind of attention in death. Elvis's death was a huge media event, but nothing like Jackson's. John Lennon's death (which really tore me up) was big news but pales in comparison to Jackson's. What currently living star could generate this kind of attention when they die? I can't imagine who. Springsteen's death (and I hope he lives forever) would be a major bummer. Paul McCartney would generate mucho media attention. But, nothing will ever approach the Jackson frenzy. |

I went to see PUBLIC ENEMIES today at the Alamo Drafthouse. It's the theater that serves food and beverages in the theater. I had to leave. The theater was packed with people drinking beer and eating meals. While the management does it's best to create a viewer friendly atmosphere, I couldn't handle the slurping and chewing going on around me. So, I saw the first 20 minutes of the film and left. What I saw was amazing. I'm catching the 7 p.m. show at another theater. Will report back. |

You left out the Reverend Jesse Jackson (the biggest publicity whore in the world) who was the first of the phony bunch to show up. |

Looks like Nia Vardalos has managed the rare feat of having two complete disasters open within a month of each other. 29% rating on rotten.tomatoes--combined. 12% for one, 17% on the other. |

Vardalos is a genuine no-talent (at least as an actress) who lucked out totally with Greek Wedding. |

Sure is. She was best friends of the sister of a good friend of mine. My Big Fat Greek Wedding actually takes place in Winnipeg but of course they changed it to Chicago? to please the American audience. |

PUBLIC ENEMIES is a stunner. Michael Mann is the most exciting American director working today. What he's done with hi-def digital cinematography is groundbreaking. I've never seen a movie that has the visual intensity of PUBLIC ENEMIES. Every moment in this movie exists to be savored. The casting is amazing. It's not the A-list stars (Depp, Bale) that commands your attention. It's the second tier actors, the B actors, the character actors, that come at you like classic thugs of the 30s. The attention to detail, from costumes to city streets and automobiles and airplanes are lovingly true to their period. It's like being plunged into the era, not just watching, but total immersion.
Is Depp good? Depp is very very good. He's doing a Gable/Presley riff and it works.
An astonishing work of art that defines what cinema is: movement, energy and beauty.
You'll all probably hate it. I expect to be the minority opinion on this one.
PUBLIC ENEMIES is a glorious film. I can't wait to experience it again. |

Thank you, Mark! I'm thrilled you liked it because the elements that you mentioned are what excite me about this film too. While everyone's been discussing Johnny Depp, I've been thinking, Michael Mann.
Cannot wait to see it. |
