I expect PUBLIC ENEMIES will frustrate some of the action crowd. Though, it is filled with action sequences, PUBLIC ENEMIES is not your typical action film. Mann approaches action the way Andrew Wyeth depicts landscape and the people and buildings that inhabit it. Mann uses depth of field and framing so aesthetically that there is a distancing effect. He's not interested in merely getting a rise out of the audience through the use of violence, he wants you to SEE the violence in all it's brutal beauty.

Marc's comment about us all probably hating Public Enemies sounds elitist and dismissive, though he may not have meant it that way. However...

I expect to hate it. Even though I run cold and very hot on Michael Mann. Loathed Heat, loved Manhunter. Was meh about Collateral, adored The Insider.

Something about the way Marc describes Public Enemies--and of course the fact that Manohla Dargis loved it--makes me think it's not my cup of tea at all.

Bruno was my least favourite Cohen character. He was a one-dimensional riff on every gay male in fashion, and beyond the easy shock value of flaunting his sexuality had the least clever or funny lines in Cohen's schtick factory.

That said, I'm still gonna' see Bruno, if for no other reason than to see the train wreck. Those rednecks who didn't quite know what to make of Borat will have their moment of clarity when they meet this guy.

Public Enemies looked like a cool action film. I was hyped. The reviews were so-so, saying the hailstorm of bullets never reached their target. My enthusiasm deflated. Now Marc makes it sound like Public Enemies has an art-film cache. Game on.

I know what Marc means about the expectation of an action flic versus the payoff of something other. I'm usually good with 'something other', as long as there's substance underneath.

My comment wasn't meant to be dismissive or elitist. I just know most of you well enough and your previous likes and dislikes that I bet PUBLIC ENEMIES is not going to go down well in here. I hope I'm wrong.

That was precisely my intention. I was sort of making a...joke, y'know?

For what it's worth, Public Enemies has received more than a few 9 and 10's out of 10 on our local popularity poll, along with, of course, its fair share of 1 and 2's. This kind of wild disparity always makes me curious.

(I'm also curious why this is the SECOND time I've almost spelled it, "Pubic Enemies".)

Spending too much time on the BTC sex discussion. Very Happy

I knew you'd love Public Enemies, Marc. You really liked Miami Vice (the movie) and I seem to remember that its visuals were a big reason.

I didn't like Miami Vice but I may like Public Enemies.

I have no interest in gangsters per se........but Miami Vice was my all time favorite tv show. Aesthetics win me over. David Denby of The New Yorker loved the aesthetics.......I'll be going soon.

I loved Collateral and Inside Man. I do think Michael Mann has something unique to say cinemagraphically. And any director who can, as Marc said, transport me to another era so seamlessly, has me very interested.

I never saw Miami Vice. I don't think I ever saw the TV show. It wasn't until after seeing Collateral that I began seeing Michael Mann as a director to keep an eye on. After all, he took an actor I'm far from fond of: Tom Cruise and a subject I thought I'd hate: a suspense action flick and turned it on its head.

I wish I could go this weekend but that appears unlikely. But I'm eager to see this movie as soon as possible.

Inside Man was a Spike Lee film. The Insider was Michael Mann's. I prefer The Insider.
