Robert Downey Jr. & Hope Davis are in Charlie Bartlett, one reason why I almost bought it blindly. It sounds reasonably good, if not tremendously original. |

But then, it was logical to show Stark within the suit, something you couldn't do with Parker inside his Spidey costume (it makes you realize what an asset it was to have those artist's renderings of his "Spidey-sense" in the comics). Going back to Three Kings, I always have a kind of moral revulsion against lighthearted entertaiment which uses the Mid East as a backdrop. But what can you do? The story was well-told, Robert Downey, Jr was great casting, and I look forward to the next one. I guess I could see him in The Incredible Hulk now, if I wanted to.
Afghanistan is really NOT the Mid-East. It's close to NW China and Pakistan.
What would you rather have? Africa? Russia? Chechya?
Basically the "villain" is just a McGuffin, or the "villain du jour."
I didn't realize it was set in Afghanistan. Yes, I'd rather have any of those places mentioned, because I think we would view the activities as fiction. Set where it is, we can't help but connect those guys to the War on Terror and 9-11, and I hate to see a national tragedy cheapened that way, reduced, as you point out, to a McGuffin. I also have a friend who served with American troops in Afghanistan and was shot at by enemies armed with our weapons (which we had given them). Hard to just kick back and enjoy the entertaiment under those cirmcumstances. Not impossible, just tainted. |

Thank you for your warm welcome bocce. I did see this film. The reason I know I really enjoyed the 2 1/2 hours is that I didn't crave a cigarette or move from my seat the entire time, i.e. short attention span & heavy addiction. I did buy the DVD series set (bought from China on eBay "Special EditionG") yes, with a G and a few burps. Having the episodes described in Chinese characters wasn't really a problem as the audio was in English. I admit to loving anything that showcases NYC...and the series and this film did so beautifully. A good story line considering there really was only one thing left undone from the series. |

I'm glad someone saw it, Globear. I was going to, but the reviews which really focused on the writing, made me decide to wait for a rental.
I loved the series as did a many on this forum. Again what we liked so much was the writing. And I could be mistaken but seems to me those that enjoyed the series were New Yorkers. Or lovers of New York City -- the obvious fifth character in the series.
One chick movie that's surprising me with its good buzz is The Women. Well, see ... |

Re: SEX...
Should be seen NOW. Why wait for the clothes to get any more dated...plus you won't be able to appreciate them on the small screen.
This is a film where you should come out humming the costumes! |

Speaking of current film...
Today I saw ZOHAN which was fun. I plan to see it again. Adam Sandler (Israeli agent) vs. John Turturro (Palestinian agent) makes for unlikely (and hilarious) casting.
PRINCE CASPIAN (or NARNIA II) was a disapointment. Don't know why reviewers seemed to prefer the sequel. I wasn't even sure they were really using Liam Neeson's voice for the lion...and he has just a tiny part. I could have easily skipped this one. I guess they'll keep on with the series...but don't bother to seek this one out. |

I preferred Prince Caspian to The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe. They're really going to need a new director for the third one, though, which is less action oriented and very visual. They also lose the two older siblings and add two more young characters. |

Glad you liked Zohan (not "Zoltan"), mo. On reflection, I think it's Sandler's best performance. I loved him--and I ain't no Sandler-maniac. |

My wife saw Sex & The City and quite enjoyed it. I haven't seen it, but I still hated it. |

Yeah, I thought Sandler was excellent in Zohan also. A bizarre movie, indeed. I liked it. They trend a very fine line between being just gross and gross but funny. I wonder how many people missed the jokes that relied on one knowing a bit of Hebrew and a lot of Yiddish. I know that there were lines that had me being the only one laughing because I was the only one who understood what was said. One of the lines translated as "going into her pussy and coming our her bellybutton." Hilarious for one person in the audience that I saw it with, me. |

This comment reminded me of Jewish Israeli pride in the fact that Hebrew doesn't have any dirty swear words. So they swear in other languages. |
