It's a little early for this, but the Film Soc of Lincoln Center has announced it's showing Louise Brooks and Wallace Beery in Beggars of Life on 25 April. The Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra will accompany.
This is A Good Thing for several reasons.
1 - Beggars of Life has been out in a very bad, too-dark version from Grapevine for years. One or two years back, it was restored in what is rumored to be a beautiful spanking clean print (I've spoken *briefly* to someone who's seen it, so this isn't too far from the original source). This screening is of that restored print, which will be nice since the Grapevine version is literally too dark to make out in some spots.
2 - Screenings often mean a new dvd; it's a good way of letting the restorers know there's interest out there - if they're on the fence about it. (Like I need another dvd.)
3 - Mont Alto (or at least Rodney) are the folks behind the annual ams calendar, and to my knowledge rarely / never perform this far east (their base is in Colorado).

I've seen the Grapevine version (and read about the set shennanigans in several places) - it's a gritty little hobo story. I can't buy tickets yet, but I'm definitely going. |

Synchronicity is a weird thing. I thought of Mike Leigh just because someone brought up the subject of British accents, and this afternoon I looked through the newspaper and found that a Mike Leigh play just opened at one of the little 42nd Street theaters ("Two Thousand Years," with Richard Masur and Natasha Lyonne). I didn't even know he wrote plays....
I'll mention this in the Theater forum too. |

In Style has better photos than Vanity Fair??? Have you not seen the Hitchcock Spread they did for this years Hollywood Issue??? In Style?????????  |

Vanity Fair has better photos in general...but In Style does cover a party better. They include recipes, photos of food, the decor, place settings, etc.
Don't forget those little gold foil wrapped chocolate Oscars and my $40,000 goodie bag.

She was also Hilary Swank's mother in Million Dollar Baby and had a part in Iron-Jawed Angels. I see her a lot; I just have trouble placing her name. |
