Thanks so much for that. It's very pretty and really interesting, but the most interesting thing about it to me is that none of the pictures (with the possible exception of Lifeboat) capture the essence of the movies they represent.
Renee Zellweger looks great as Kim Novak but nothing like the real thing. Javier Bardem is a pretty good Jimmy Stewart substitute, but Scarlett Johannson is pablum as compared with Grace Kelly. Marion Cotillard is fine but more "actressy" than Janet Leigh. Perhaps it's unfair to complain because each is just one photo, but Jodie Foster, for instance, is doing "too much" as Tippi Hedren, and Naomi Watts isn't doing quite enough.
Lifeboat works best because it's an ensemble and none of the actors is called upon to capture the essence of the originals. Eva Marie Saint and Julie Christie are marvelous, but I can't tell which one of them is supposed to represent Tallulah Bankhead.
(Looked at the picture again and it's clearly Saint who is the Bankhead substitute. Saint is great, possibly the best single contributor to the photo essay, but Christie would be a very close second. What amazing dames they are!)
Another P.S.
Is it just coincidence (I think not) that Eva Marie Saint is the only actor in the essay to have actually worked with Hitchcock and winds up capturing his essence the best? Food for thought. |

Well, I'm quite happy that Tang Wei is getting at least a little of the recognition she deserves. |

I sat on a panel with her last summer in Atlanta. She still looks fantastic and has hardly aged at all. |

Keep in mind, I'm only the messenger. LOL! But I agree with you Mo. I don't know why he wasn't used. He would have been perfect!!
I agree with you Billy. Renee looked great as Kim Novak. She got the shot, I thought. I also liked Charlese Theron from Dial M For Murder.
I thought these were the two most successful photos. Most probably because neither actress over acted. I need to look at the photos from Psycho and Lifeboat again. |

I'd love to see the photo of Janet Leigh and Marion Cotillard side by side. When I first saw it, I honestly didn't know who it was. But I think her photos were very choreographed to match the shower scene from Psycho. Of course I was looking for a blond.
It's been too many years since I've seen Lifeboat to comment on the photo.
I'd also love to see these so I could read the captions. Oh, well ... |

Excellent commentary you guys. But I was impressed. Especially the Strangers On A Train shot -- SOOOOO awesome -- and also that they went to Saville Row to get the exact suit that Grant wore in NBNW for Seth Rogen! |

Ratatouille is technically the best animated feature I have seen. It is perfect visually. Less exciting story than The Incredibles, but quite serviceable. |

Re the Hitchcock shoot:
They were very careful to get most of the details correct, but what is that lipstick doing on Keira Knightley as Joan Fontaine? A major part of Rebecca rested on Fontaine's looking very mousy. Here she looks like a borderline prom queen. |

I did _not_ like the "Strangers on a Train" shot. It looked like they had cut and pasted the heads on the figures. The heads are a bit too large for the bodies, also. It was the only shot that looked like this. |

Another complaint I had was with Downey as Cary Grant in To Catch a Thief. That was more like Errol Flynn. More "dashing" than "suave." |
