But I have to take exception to describing that one scene as "homoerotic sadomasochistic torture." (Especially since I spent an aggravating 2-1/2 weeks trying to convince my mother she didn't want to go.) That really came across as torture, pure and simple. There were two men in a room. One was naked. The other was wailing on him. The naked one made jokes to poke at his torturer. Neither was getting off on this.
Fortunately Mama Wakasa laughed at the jokes (which were funny), so I knew she was okay with it.
I'm glad that Mama Wakasa enjoyed the Bond movie.
The point I was making about the "homoerotic aspects" of the torture sequence was that I felt certain _audience members_ might find it erotic. Certainly, the nudity of Craig and the way his body is shot could be construed as erotic (or homoerotic).
In that cold blue light, I thought his body looked like a fine sculpture.
To be precise: sadistic, yes; masochistic, no. See post below for what I wrote.
[BTW, I often think one sees what one wants to see in a film. Others might not see the same implications another person would.] |

I totally agree. All of the performances were great, especially when most of the cast were non-actors doing very convincing acting. That's how it seemed, anyway. One of the most moving performances, I thought, was by the guy (I can't remember the character's name) who played one of the hunters in Jaguar Paw's tribe; he was a bigger guy, and had the fertility issues. He was good in the early scenes in which he was being teased by the other members of the tribe, and then later on in the movie, his expressions of grief/rage/helplessness while shackled and witnessing the ravaging of the village just made that whole devastating sequence really hit home. |

smoot--That guy was superb (should check out his name, but the characters are hard to differentiate), as were Jaguar Paw's dad, his son, and the head villain. All so well chosen, and the camera adored them. |

Straight or gay, I really didn't see anything erotic about that scene. I just viewed it as an extreme form of torture that Bond is not normally subjected to. |

Marj, mon petit, just caught this. Jennifer Holliday is still recording and concertizing, albeit more sporadically than in the 80s and 90s. She did a very effective Ally McBeal a half decade or so ago, and does many GLBT benefits and such. She's the berries.

As for Beyonce's alleged sweetness, that's not what the location director, an intimate, indicated. She was late to the first day of shooting because of a press junket in NYC (which, admittedly, was more her manager and handler's faux pas), and it set a tone of star behavior for the shoot that seldom subsided, with Mssrs. Foxx and Murphy not exactly above such pyrotechnics. "It's all up to Condon's editing," said my colleague..."That shoot was a nightmare of egos." Except Baby Jen Hudson, whom he found adorable, clearly thrilled to be around Beyonce and Murphy and Jamie and Anika, etc.
As for Ms. Connelly, there's nothing wrong with her eyebrows, but throughout Little Children they transfixed me, so I wondered if anyone knew what was up with them. It was sort of a joke. |
