Betsy, you seem to have a weakness for disturbing films.

I guess I've waited long enough to post my Top 10, which some may change over the years, but this is the current list and is in no particular order:

JERRY MAGUIRE
REAR WINDOW
THE GODFATHER
ALMOST FAMOUS
THE APARTMENT
GOODFELLAS
TRUE ROMANCE
SCHINDLER'S LIST
THE TALENTED MR RIPLEY
GOOD WILL HUNTING

It's always hard to narrow it down to 10.

A couple of years ago Schindler's List was my favorite film. Now it's not even on the top ten. I am flexible...or wishy-washy.

In my top 20 are some movies nobody seems to know, but you should check out:

Smile (multi-drama at a teen beauty contest, and hilarious)
Lili (Leslie Caron's first Oscar nomination)
Night Moves (arguably Gene Hackman's best movie)

I see it as flexible.

And I've seen Night Moves (not to be confused with Night Shift). It is an excellent film and a great performance by Hackman. Although, I really liked Hackman in The Firm.

I should have included ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST. It was one of those rare films that went beyond entertainment into the realm of raising my consciousness.

I love, love, love Smile. Totally agree, one of the best of the 70's. "...And that girl had a wooden leg."

I still have far to many english language films to process in order to make a top 10 list so I'll list, off the top of my head, in no particular order, my 10 favourite foreign language films.

8 1/2

The Seven Samuri

400 Blows

Shoot the Piano Player

Breathless

La Notte

The Burmese Harp

The Music Room

Il Posto

The Red Desert

Wings of Desire

Talk to Me

Woman On the Verge of A Nervous Breakdown

Viridiana

Zatoichi, the Blind Swordsman

Fires On the Plain

Wild Strawberries

Virgin Spring

The Seventh Seal

Les Carbinierres

Mr. Hulot's Holiday

Tutti A Casa

I Viteloni

I give up, I couldn't keep it to 10 and there are still many more.

I hear ya, marantzo. There's no way I can whittle it down, I'm not even trying. My favorite American Film is A Place In The Sun and my favorite French Film is Cléo de 5 à 7. Italian - one of many Fellinis. Spanish - one of many Almodóvars.

We just watched Mr. Hulot's Holiday (Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot) again the other night. Simply brilliant. What a master of sound Monsieur Tati was!

Ehle, did the version you saw of MHH have the ending with the woman on the train looking at a picture of M. Hulot and smiling warmly? The last few times I saw it, tapes etc. they cut that off. I was really pissed.

No. The Criterion Edition's last shot is of his poor little auto pulling away from the hotel with the camera looking towards the beach from the hotel with the street in between. There were no alternate endings, either. Hmmm.

Isn't Mr Hulot a French version of Mr Bean?
