I so agree with you. Cannot for the life of me understand what people see in this faintly ridiculous, unnecessarily grim movie.

I've actually never seen it, and on the surface it doesn't sound like the kind of movie I'd gravitate to; but, given how much good Korea celluloid I've seen lately, plus the good reviews it's gotten, I'd give it a go.

Has anyone discussed HARD CANDY? I just watched it and would appreciate some clarification about some of its elements. Let me know. Spoilers abound in this 2005 release.

Re: the ALI G DVD's, seasons 1 and 2.

These are both wonderful. I love the Borat and Bruno characters even more than Ali G.

Best of all is curmudgeonly Andy Rooney giving Ali G a lecture on English usage and then terminating the interview.

How Sacha Baron Cohen got some of the VIP's to participate is beyond me. BTW, his brother Simon Baron Cohen is a famous psychologist who has done ground-breaking work in the field of autism!

Clever these Jews.

Not sure that came across quite right. But one thing I do know, is that Sascha Baron Cohen wouldn't have felt the need to equivocate.

My favourite Ali G moment came when he was interviewing Posh Spice and hubby David Beckham, and he asked her if she took it up the bum. They took it in good stead (they were in on the joke) but the momentary pause that followed as they grappled with the answering the question, the mental picture created, the undermining of their carefully manufactured public personae - for everything else there's Mastercard, but that was priceless.

Just finsihed watching INSIDE MAN

Actually better than what I expected. Spike Lee's work was very diverse in this film and all of the characters went very well together.

The ending even provided an unexpected turn, even though I figured out who was involved with the purpose of the robbery at the beginning of the film.

Denzel and Clive were on character and very enjoyable to watch.

The VIP American who seemed to take Sascha Baron Cohen's Ali G in the best stride was NJ governor Christine Taylor Whitman (or whatever her name is - oops). She did a passable rap number for him.

Gore Vidal was also quite good - esp. when he was accused of being a "hairdresser."

Noam Chomsky was another one who just didn't get it and was impossibly serious.

As an ensemble, the best group taking it from Borat was the Pico Republicans (this is an extra - but a true high point). Very funny - and I think it's obvious that they weren't in on the joke.

As for Bruno - I enjoyed watching hunky college boys on vacation in Florida go ballistic when they found out they were doing a "P.A.R.T.Y." cheer for Gay Austrian TV.

Superficially, Inside man was a standard actioner, a Hollywood hybrid of a hostage and a heist movie. Indeed, it may have been sold that way. But Lee added enough shades, shifts and shadows to make it much more interesting. Far better than Ocean's any number.

I agree, all the way. There were plenty of "only Spike Lee" moments. Some minor ones - Clive in conversation with the hostage kid; and, "Does anyone here speak Albanian?" The first thirty minutes had my full attention. Wasn't crazy about Jodi, though.

Yeah, Jodie was just ok.

As I said before, the ending was something unexpected, but very much enjoyed.

Hmmmmm. Gary, the documentary on Chomsky that was in Sta. Fe a while back was a HUGE hit. It ran for weeks. It was like the second coming.

I didn't know he was a prick...but he sure is a bore with Ali G. And Andy Rooney acts as if he's the only person on earth who's allowed to be funny. The word "smug" seems to have been created for Andy Rooney.

I just finished watching Breillat's ROMANCE. This movie is a huge downer, much more depressing than Noe's IRREVERSIBLE imo by a long shot. I'm off to the imdb.com to read about it.
I really like Breillat's films, but this one was difficult and hard to take.

P.S. I wish the heroine had just stuck with Rocco Siffredi (by far the most attractive man in the film) so the audience could have avoided all the angst.

Gary: You just don't "get" Chomsky. His early stuff was great, especially the album with Mose Allison.

PS: Did you know he was a drummer with The Dave Clark Five for awhile in 1965?
