| But isn't that a really sad thing? I know she has on-again, off-again issues (perhaps more regularly on). But she's incredibly talented. Of course, you know this better than I do, having seen in On A Clear Day. It strikes me as a real loss, not only for her but for the move/theatergoing world. |

| Eugene Jarecki's documentary Why We Fight won the 2005 Sundance Grand Jury Award. It starts with Eisenhower warning the country of the military-industrial complex, then covers critically American foreign policy of past several decades, the wars since WWII, and the increasing power of corporations, especially munitions manufacturers, their collusion with Congress, and the power of the new players, namely the lobbyists and the think tanks. It shows us the leaders as well as some very ordinary folks, and lets us hear their views. It is about money, power, greed, lying and deceit. An excellent movie. |

It's incredibly sad. She is enormously talented, gargantuanly so. Not only in On a Clear Day (the most amazing example) but also in The Apple Tree (before her infamous, legendary on-stage freak-out), and on film in Nashville and Family Plot. |

Sounds funny, but when the article sarcastically responds to the use of bigamy in the plotline by saying

It may have taken time to stamp it out in actuality (much like the slave trade being outlawed in 1808, but not doing much to halt internal slavery or its successor, Jim Crow); but, from what I can find, the official LDS church did withdraw polygamy it in 1890, reiterating that withdrawal and adding a ban in 1904. I don't know when actual excommunication for polygamy became standard practice.
Not sure what motivated the LDS this time around (and I don't know if the producer is a member); but the movie's been floating around and available for years - and not just from the LDS - so I don't see anything insidious going on here. |

Thanks for the post, lady. I know where the Organ Loft is and will make plans to go check this out.
As for the polygamy issue, I think the pure nature of the LDS history, polygamy will always be associated with anything Mormon in the world outside Utah.
Lady is right. Nothing insidious going on... just the ongoing association that will never go away.
There's been tons of anti-Mormon movies over the years, with the most famous being one called "The Godmakers" (which mostly screened in homes on VHS and now DVD). I had forgotton about this silent film and I know it's resurfaced in various forms over the years. I think the idea of bringing the film back is more for entertainment and restoration purposes than to stir up anything negative about the LDS church. IMO, the church can handle their own negative aspects without outside help, espeically around election time and mixing the church/state issue. |

It is not stamped out, whether it is officially approved of or not. Didn't HBO just do another drama series based on the concept? (A kind of Sopranos about a Mormon polygamist.) There's a real question as to how much it goes on, and how much, despite the official stance, the Church does to discourage it. The last time a Mormon man was jailed for polygamy (what, two years ago?), there was a big media spotlight put on the culture, and these questions were asked.
Of course Mormons are not evil figures luring outsiders into their world. And most Mormons are not polygamists. And officially the religion does not support it.
But it continues to crop up, and the religion, as Chilly points out, still has something of a bad press in mainstream society. So a Reefer Madness of Mormonism could have its modern-day propoganda side. I'm just saying, I doubt it's being show strictly for it's Plan 9 qualities. |

Thanks for linking Refer Madness. That's the one movie I was trying to think of with my previous post.
I think the main reason polygamy is still a news issue isn't due to the LDS church. It's the fundemental LDS and their communities and people being a constant blip on the news radar. The official LDS church pretty much ignores it (and some elected officials do as well, like former governor Mike Leavitt used to when he was in office).
That HBO show was called Big Love. |

I'm sure you're right about the leaders of the church. I'm really not saying "those lying Mormons are all bagging 10 wives" or anything of the kind. Just as one could point to the recurrent issue of priests abusing kids, it's not a question of whether the institution condones these things, but that they do occur and stick in the public's consciousness. And, of course, neither church wants to be known for it.
If a Catholic diocese held a showing of a "laughingly bad" movie with a plotline that involved priests kidnapping young boys, I'd suggest there may be a certain p.r. motivation behind that screening, as well. |

I wonder if there was some sort of timing issue with this, given the recent LDS genral confernce that happened downtown this past weekend (it happens twice a year or two days during the first week of April and the first week of October).
Or maybe they were simply just interested in getting an older silent film back into the mainstream. |
