Hitchcock anecdote --

I recall the good old days when I worked on the Universal lot. You actually _would see_ Edith Head's trim little beige Mercedes 230 SL in front of her bungalow/office from time to time - meaning that she was actually there.

I remember hoping soooo much that Hitchcock would sign a book for me. I went to his little bungalow/office and spoke to his sec'y. She gave me no hope whatsoever that I'd ever get my book signed. I asked if it would be OK just to leave the book for him to sign at his convenience. Well, I don't think he ever came back on the lot - he was ailing. Finally, many months later I went back to get my book (unsigned, of course).

Re:"Legendary Sin Cities."

Surprisingly the segment on Shanghai focuses much more on political history (the Green Gang, Chiang Kai Shek and Sun Yat-sen - sp.?) than on sex and drugs. There are some great shots of the Bund and the French Concession.

There's even stuff about Sun Yat-sen's Russian-Jewish bodyguard from WINNIPEG (Cohen) - so Marantzo you've gotta check this out. Maybe Mama Marantzo knew him??

Recommended to all, esp gromit. There's even some stuff about the White Russian taxi dancers ("White Countess").

A very interesting documentary.

Mo, what was that Cohen guys first name? If he were from Winnipeg, I guarantee that my parents knew him. Everyone in the community knew everyone. At that time in Winnipeg history there were 35,000 Jews in the city. Now there are around 14,000.

His name was (naturally) MORRIS COHEN, also known as General 2-Gun Cohen. 1887 - 1970. You can google him. You will get lots of results.

He was born in Britain. I'm not sure how long he lived in Winnipeg. He is characterized as an "adventurer."

Jeeze, what a guy. Now that would make a good movie. I'm pretty sure my parents didn't know him. Thanks, Mo.

Thanks lady. Interesting list. I agree with quite a few, but some are ridiculous. For instance, Breakfast at Tiffany's.

Horrors! I've seen almost of them on the big screen. In either 16 or 35mm. (And I'm younger than Marantz.)

me, too Mo. We used to wait with baited breath for the next Hitchcock to come out. I hated to have to pay 50 cents to see a movie when I turned 12.

with baited breath

One of the top ten most commonly misspelled words is "baited" for "bated" breath. To "bait" means to attract as with a lure. To "bate" means to "abate," which is what we mean when we say "bated breath."

That misspelling has always bugged me, too. "Baited breath" always makes me think of some exotic predator that lures animals into its mouth with tasty food odors. Or some female secret agent who's a "honey trap."

You came back, Shane!

Maybe Billy can convince Sharon Stone to join. That should help raise the average!
