| Listening to the commentary track of Junebug, an utterly charming and rather interesting track by Embeth Davidtz and Amy Adams (only the two women) who appear to like each other enormously and are very intelligent. The movie (which I saw twice in the theater and could pleasurably see many more times) is absolutely wonderful, and gets better and better on reseeing. Davidtz was thisclose to getting my nomination as Best Actress for the Blanche awards and she and Adams are enlightening about the filmmaking and some of the choices made. It's a good listen and a great watch. |

| Ira Sachs' Forty Shades of Blue won the top prize for 2005 at Sundance. The story is about a music producer in Memphis, his much younger Russian common-law wife, and his writer son whose marriage is on the rocks. It has some bright moments. but on the whole it is slow and non-engaging. Perhaps the best feature is the performance of Rip Torn. |

| What no black pimps in Memphis? How dare they do a movie without that! |

Ehle...........What a shame that Eros is a disappointment!!
Billy and Mo............On your recommendation, I watched the first half of The Staircase. I searched for your comments on it and only found a few. Billy.......riveting is the word. I stayed up watching past my bedtime.
I have some thoughts on it (not having seen the second half yet) SPOILERS POSSIBLE:
There was a CSI plot.......I think that was very similar. Is he guilty? Well....all that blood from a fall down 4 steps? Did his clothing have any blood on it? What wife wouldn't be mad to find out her husband was cheating? Even if it was with another man....and it was just sex? Remember Scott Peterson (yikes......another Peterson) said his wife knew about his affair and was okay with it? Maybe he was a good father..........but that hidden side would bother me if I was his kid.
Seems like the first half really focuses on the trials of a defense lawyer.......the stress of it, the anger and tension, and endless work. The defendent seems fairly carefree. The support of the kids and exwife is pretty daunting.
Can't wait for the next half. For anyone who watches 48 hour mystery or the CSI's this is the whole deal in an artfully done package. |

BE SURE TO WATCH THE EXTRAS ON THE DVD!
Aphrodite Jones' book gives quite a bit of insight into the kids, but the ex-wife remains an enigma. In many ways I think that she could be the clue to the whole puzzle. |

The couch just doesn't get much better than an orgy of CRIME STORY. Chicago's in the '60's - my kinda town.
Good to see Gary Sinise (and David Caruso) looking like college kids. Esp. Sinise - he has a minor but really memorable part.
Pam Grier and Stephen Lang have an interracial thing...and retired pharmacist turned character actor Nathan Davis (father of director Andrew Davis) plays Stephen Lang's mob-connected father.
And general all-around kudos for the costumes, sets, locations, cars and the MUSIC. A lot of fun to see many of the actors who turned up later in the CSI shows. |

Re: last disc from the 1st season of CRIME STORY, episode #2. BTW, the show has now moved from Chicago to Las Vegas.
JULIA ROBERTS plays a teen sexually abused by her attorney step-father who happens to be working with Dennis Farina and the team from the crime squad.
What's remarkable about this episode (from 1986) is that teen Julia puts in a pretty phenomenal performance - better IMO than _any_ of her later movie roles. I'm amazed at the raw talent she demonstrates in this particular episode.
A must-see. |

It would be hard to be better than her deserved Oscarwinning turn in Erin Brockovich, a well-received but still severely underrrated classic. |

| That, in fact, I've yet to see. I'm prejudiced against Roberts, but am willing to revise my opinion. |

Why prejudiced? Well, whatever, she's great in EB. |

I'm not sure I can fully explain it, since it's a "gut level" thing. I think I've always seen her as overrated, and thus I tend to underrate her. I've never thought she was attractive, so that part of her public appeal was always odd to me. She seems dislikable in real life, which has nothing to do with her onscreen abilities, but since my initial response to her screen presence is lukewarm, it contributes to a negative feeling.
Indeed, as I look back I'm not sure I have ever seen a Julia Roberts movie in more than little pits on television. Wait. I saw The Mexican. A mistake. But that's only one movie. I always meant to see Erin Brockovich, but so far haven't. |
