Nancy:

Agreed. It's just an appalling piece of writing that manipulates an appalling chapter in our nation's history.

But what I think is important to note is that Dargis wasn't making a mistake in failing to recognize a distinction. She implies pretty explictly that Leo Penn didn't get work not because of the blacklist, but because he was too shitty a director to get any work anyway, and the blacklist somehow became the family's convenient excuse. It's logic most foul.

And that sounds like the sort of tripe the blacklisters would come up with, particularly when they were trying to claim that there wasn't any blacklist.

Then it's settled.

Ms. Dargis must die.

Ya know, I believe it was a good film, though nowhere near great. However, that actress that played Shug was so goddamned one-dimensional it drove me to distraction.

OTOH, In Her Shoes is firmly planted in my top 10 of 2005. What a genuinely sweet, well thought out, engaging film. Kudos to Hanson, Diaz, Collette and Maclaine. I need to sit on it a bit more, but I swear, this is a great movie.

Taraji P. Henson ("that actress"'s name) is one of my Blanche nominations. And, I think, Marc's. If that's one-dimensional acting, I love me some single dimensions.

I'll go there with you, though. And MacLaine is another of my nominations (and Diaz will be when the category comes up).

ENRON: The Smartest Guys in the Room. This is a masterfully edited docu, taking even a casual viewer with no real knowledge of a very complicated scam, from yawn to outrage in two hours. Love those penguins, but the state of our deferred comp plans is closer to our hearts.

Thank you, Trish........for that link, etc.

Lady.........I don't think Dargis is avoiding recognition in NYC..........she still lives in LA. She is pretty...........perhaps her reason for not having her photo in the Times is that she's still thinking of herself as not being there, but in LA.

More to explore....

I started watching Hustle & Flow last night. Wanted subtitles. I cannot understand what T. Howard is saying. So far, not impressed with Taryn Maning........I liked her better in that Britney Spears vehicle. (seriously, she was good)

However, I was totally blown away by 2046. When I saw In the Mood for Love, I was disappointed.....expected to be captivated and wasn't. Now, I'll have to go back and review.

But 2046 has the visual beauty, the music, the acting.....and the story. The story isn't as accesible as the sight and sound........but with the dvd having all the extras......it is well explained by the director. Wong Kar-wai. I'm kind of in awe of him and his way of working......no script for the actors......no pretetermined goal........and improvising with the cameraman and the design man. His next film is going to be The Lady from Shanghai with Nicole Kidman. She asked to work with him. Can't wait.

And I'm in love with Tony Leung Chiu-wai. When he's interviewed, you wouldn't know he had played the character of Chow. They are so different. Same with the interview of Zhang Ziyi.......she's nothing like her character. That's transformation......can't think of a Hollywood actor who can do that.

Yea -- another fan of 2046! This one blew me away, too, Befade, but I want to see it again before I write anything. I received the Criterion edition of In The Mood for Love as birthday presents, so I'll be able to watch the two together. Can't wait.

Again, Ziyi Zhang is in one of my favorite movies of the year. Last year, it was House of Flying Daggers. And I haven't even seen Geisha yet.

I had the exact opposite reaction. 2046 left me cold. But, I am going to watch it again soon.

I turned it off after 20 minutes. I try again someday. Maybe.
