sorry tire I got confused and shit.

THE DESCENT movie and THE DESCENT book share very little other than cave explorers discovering underground creatures. THE DESCENT book is a philosophical novel about an ancient underground civilization (Hell). THE DESCENT movie is a lean mean gore flick with nothing on its mind other than to scare the shit out of you.

The Descent the film, is a cheap, but well made scare flick. It does was it says on the tin, nothing more, nothing less.

I look forward to seeing it.

As for Jeff Long's The Descent and Year Zero-- they're both good reads in the "End-of-the-World" genre.

I'm trying to buy DVDs for a friend who's in Johannesburg. Will UK DVDs (PAL region 2) work?

Lady: Yes, we're region 2 as well. Many have a multi-region player, but those sold here in SA are mostly region 2 only (for now).

Lady,

I believe Tire is right, Amazon.co.uk sells disks as Region 2 or Region 0 (any region) so they should work in South Africa. However, there is something called a subcode in Region 2 disks - Subcode 1 means UK only. I’m not sure how the subcode effects the playing (it maybe for information only) or whether Amazon.co.uk observe subcode restrictions, but you need to check.

South Africa, like most of the world outside theAmerican sphere of influence – The Americas, The Philippines and a lump of rock near Guam, use PAL.

I don't really understand this stuff.

In Her Shoes is a wonderful movie. It was terrific in the movie theater, and I think it will translate beautifully to DVD. MacLaine and Diaz and Norman Lloyd and Mark Feuerstein are all aces. Collette is somewhat less than she was in Muriel's Wedding and The Sixth Sense, but she holds up her end well.

I neglected to mention Norman Lloyd in what has to be one of the most remarkable performances of his long career.
Mark Feuerstein could make a career of playing perfect Jewish lawyer/doctor material for old grannies - I mean this in a good way.

I'd be happy to cite both Diaz and Lloyd for Blanches.

Then do it. Diaz is definitely one of my three, and Lloyd missed the cut by thismuch.

Unfortunately, the main title I wanted to get for my friend's daughter (The Adventures of Prince Achmed) is specifically Region 1 here (I asked the guy at the distribution company in the US). The actual restoration was done by the BFI (which hasn't answered my email yet), which put it out as Region 2. I might be wrong, but I'm thinkin' it's not sold in the RSA. And my friend has no idea what her DVD player, and this was going to be a surprise.

I think the Japanese might use NTSC. I really wish everything was universal, but it will never be. %^{

If you click on the DVD info on this page, you will see that Amazon.co.uk seem to be saying that their disk of Price Achmed will play in South Africa.

But at £19.99 it's not cheap.

I think I might be adding Diaz to my best actress list also (unless I get to see Transamerica and my mind is changed).

(just had to try that new edit button out - cool Smile )
