Lacey, re your location, are you the cybernaut formerly known as Pambula?

nope. I don't belong to many forums and I tend to use the same name (I'm confused enough without giving separate names to my personalities).

I agree about the ideas though. Even fun characters and good writing can fall short if the plot has been recycled too many times. I think that's one of the many reasons so many of us like Buffy. While the themes that showed up in individual epispodes may have been tried and true, the base of the story was unique. And, while today butt-kicking female leads are starting to look like the norm (does every female in television now come equipped with a black belt?), at the time Buffy aired female action leads were still far and few between.

You know the pendulum has swung far when even the twiglike Keira Knightley is allowed to beat the tar out of heavy-jawed mesomorphs.

I guess the logic is that women have a lower center-of-gravity and so can out-leverage all the topheavy dudes.

bart,

Pambula was here for a while under the name Jynx, but she left several months ago.

I think we were unfairly mean to Pambula and I'm sorry she's gone. Even though she mentioned her happiness that the idiot Bush had been re-elected which was bound to rub a lot on here the wrong way, the response was uncalled for and insensitive about her condition. It was certainly not a high point on these forums.

She flirted with me constantly online, and generally fogged my glasses. So I'm a bit biased and inclined to ignore her partisan positions. It's like Charlie Sheen, in 2/half Men talking about how crazy chicks are really hot in bed, just make sure you can see their hands at all times.

Not that I'm saying Republican equates to crazy.

Though lately I've been tempted.

Anyone here watch Arrested Development? I was inclined to ignore it, but watched about four eps this fall and found it surprisingly original, well-written, and just insanely funny at times. I don't generally like the handheld camera work, but was able to overlook it.

The copy of Serenity that I pre-ordered from Amazon arrived today. Apparently it has 20 minutes of deleted scenes and outtakes. I'm looking forward to seeing what there is. Too bad I have to go out for the evening.

I agree. I think the same about Lissa and Marilyn, and I'd like to see all three of them back here.

I can't figure out what Marilyn found that I couldn't see and I wasn't here when Lissa left, though I do know about it second hand, but I'd like to see them all back also.

Bart,

I thought the first two seasons were great, the premiere this season the best ever...then it all went downhill.

But Alternative Universes is a sci-fi/fantasy forum. This is a conversation for So What's On...

I have a bit to add. Picked it up from SCIFI.com

Jolene Blalock of Star Trek: Enterprise will guest-star in an upcoming episode of ABC's hit Lost.

Blalock was supposed to guest in the second episode of the current season, which was originally Sawyer's (Josh Holloway) backstory. But the episode was swapped for a Michael (Harold Perrineau Jr.) flashback.

Blalock will appear as a woman from Sawyer's past. The monster is also coming back very soon. Lost returns with new episodes in January.

Glad to know the forum parameters. I saw "alternate" and took that to mean generally anything unusual or esoteric, so maybe a broader category than just SF/fantasy.

DL - Thanks for all that info. Does this mean you are (like Michael, Jin and Sawyer) back on the island now after trying to escape? Withdrawal symptoms too tough to handle?

Speaking of Lost, I got the Riverworld books 2-5, which bart referred to as having a striking similarity to the Lost plot. (I had already purchased Book 1 during the "one for you, one for me" winter solstice gift buying spree.)

I've just started Book 2, so I don't have a good foundation for a full-blown comparison; but while I see a couple similarities, it doesn't seem like the Lost writers read the books and became "inspired" by them. In other words, it's not outright plagiarism, which in TV World, I find quite refreshing.

And, RIP to Jenny Calendar's Uncle Enyos, Vincent Schiavelli. This makes, what, three fora where he's been mentioned?

well I will say that all the obits were talking about the droopy eyed guy from Ghost - I got who that meant but I was thinking ....I know him from somewhere else!!!! So I went to IMDB and realized he was Jenny Calendar's uncle. Until I got his Buffy cred I couldn't rest. The guest shots there, especially without makeup, are ...memorable.
