The recent Shane discussion led me to read the book. While I would call it not much more than high pulp, if the film is one of your favorites, as it is mine, then you should look at it before seeing the film again. It's a quick read. It gives you just enough background on these two conflicting waves of settlers, and it's fun to see how the words of one character sometimes wind up in the mouth of another. |

I've never seen the movie. I own a copy of the book, but I haven't read it. |

That seems to happen to most artists that follow that path. |

Great movie. One of the more mainstream of Woody Allen's and a fine performance from John Cusack. The entire cast was great, but Cusack's role did it for me. |

I agree. It's hard for me to imagine someone not liking it, but there are. |

My Fellini DVD collection grew twofold yesterday when my honey presented me with City Of Women and Roma for my birthday. Bless.
He also got me the magnificent March Of The Penguins. I can't believe I missed it on the big screen, but am very happy to have finally caught up with it. Sad, funny, and bewildering. A must-see. |

Really? I thought you had seen it on the big screen. Saw it twice and it was majestic and wonderful. Can't wait to own it on DVD. I've been instructed not to purchase it myself and to wait for the 25th.... then if I don't get it, I can go buy it. |

Still my without-any-competition choice as #1 movie of the year, documentary or non-documentary. |

I don't think I read people's reviews in here, but did anyone mention how cool the long-shots were? They totally looked like people waddling along. What a beautiful movie. |

Thanks, billy. It was yesterday. A totally laid-back, watch movies and curl up on the sofa with one another kinda day. I had had a great night on Saturday, saw Abigail's Party with friends and met even more friends for a wonderful Caribbean/Soul dinner party afterwards. |

How was Abigail's Party? I read a terrible review of it, but that doesn't mean anything. |

There were 6 of us that went, all with varying tastes in the theater and we were all very pleased. I thought it was really funny and turned out to be like a Mike Leigh film being performed live. Lot's of really interesting acting and of course, witty writing. I read a bad review today and it seemed to focus on the fact that Jennifer Jason Leigh likes to take on character's that have (to his ear) grating vocal qualities. To me, she was like an amalgam of all of the great, and yeah, grating vocals, of the majority of the women characters in Mike Leigh's films. From Brenda Blethyn (Secrets & Lies) to Katrin Cartlidge (Naked and Career Girls) to Jane Horrocks (Life Is Sweet) to Imelda Staunton (Vera Drake). The play's definitely not superb by any stretch, but I was completely entertained throughout. |

Very effective was the first long shot of them - very, very long, curled and distorted by the atmosphere, creating anticipation. It reminded me of Close Encounter aliens walking down the spaceship ramp. |

The marching penguins reminded me of a bunch of religious Jews coming out of synagogue.
If you listen closely you can actually hear a small voice saying, "Vat, you call this a mackerel?!?" |
