Ehle...........well, I finished Last Days last night. I don't think I can rave about it because of the subject matter. (a person on his way to an assignation with self annihilation) Meaning that it didn't make me feel good.

That it was well done is perfectly clear. Van Sant is an artist with color and sound. Did you notice how Michael Pitt often wore something red.....in contrast to the green of the woods? Red.........a color that should mean life, awake, notice me, stop.........or what?

The sound was unmatchable in any film I remember: the feet crunching on leaves, sloshing on water, the crackling fire. Michael's guitar riff. Perhaps, the viewer is meant to experience exquisite beauty as a contrast to pathetic decline (I wouldn't say pathetic despair..........because Blake did move around and perform functions.........like building a fire, fixing a bowl of cereal, eating macaroni.)

There wasn't the inertia or excruciating pain I would have expected in someone ready to abandon all hope. There were big helpings of meaninglessness and avoidance......and Blake's back when he was walking spoke of strain and loss of strength.

Supposedly, when I person makes a decision to commit suicide there is relief and a peaceful anticipation of being free. I didn't see that in Pitt's face at the end..............Did you?

Ehle.........Since you are a man of few words........it will be nice to have you as moderator. I like succint.

Yes, yes, yes. The sound is so perfect. It's one of the first things we commented on after the screening. Also the only time there is music is very important, because really, drugs and music was all Blake had. One of my favorite scenes has Blake baked out of his mind and semi-watching a Boyz II Men video. Van Sant could have probably used "The End of the Road", but instead went with a much less obvious choice and I felt that the scene was elevated because of it.

I don't think that the drugs allowed Blake to feel any of that. Perhaps just a sadness and confusion over the fame. I also feel like that's why we see that beautiful scene right after he blows himself away. That was showing us that perhaps now, Blake will be in peace, and free.

Thank you for the kind words regarding the Moderator gig.

That's true. I don't know if it is true in all cases. But people close to ones who seem inclined in this direction are told to be alerted if they all of a sudden seem to cheer up and start to give those close to them, presents of some of their things. If they seem to be well adjusted and content with themselves...watch out!

That's it I guess. We just didn't see him shooting up or ingesting.

I'll drink to that! Here's to the maladjusted among us!

And I think suicide themed movies are ones I want to avoid. Though I saw Sylvia and The Sea Inside (I LOVE Javier Bardem).

One of the great "suicide" movies is The Devil, Probably, Robert Bresson's late films.
