Remember a mid-fifties TIME review of a Sirk/Hudson movie: "If it was any sweeter, the audience would have needed insulin".

I don't think I have seen any Sirk movies, the homage to him a few years ago was far far superior. See I was a young teenager then and I didn't go to see 'woman's' movies. I've grown now and include all kinds of movies.

Wyman's deference to her spoiled rich children's prejudiced judgements was not for believing. I kept saying between laughs, "You foolish foolish woman!"

You have to get into the soap suds, Gary, and wallow. That's what makes these films fun and subtly subversive. On the surface, there were probably a million 50s housewives and husbands eating up the conventional values, while Sirk was quietly thumbing his nose at them.

Marilyn there was no way in hell I could get into this movies mindset. Sitting on the outside watching this freak show was good for me.

"I've grown now and include all kinds of movies."

Well, not all kinds.

Heh heh heh.

I was making a sarcastic little joke at my own expense, Brownie. Have a drink and relax.

I seriously, seriously disagree with the notion that Sirk was subverting anything. I think that is totally in the minds of the auteur theorists who lionized him. And I think it's just an excuse to enjoy a trashy soap opera. Why not just admit to liking soap operas?

Ehle..............I started watching Last Days tonight. So far, so mesmerizing. Even my dog didn't take his eyes off the screen..........and there were no animals in sight, except my other dog.......and she doesn't watch TV.

Cool. Did you not crack up @ the Yellow Pages Ad Salesman scene?

Actually, I have seen interviews with Douglas Sirk from the '70s and he said he was being actively subversive. He said, sometimes, you have to rely on the audience's ability to glean from material what you're not allowed to say up front.

I thought I'd read that but I couldn't reference it at the time, thanks for letting me know I'm not completely loony Rod.

Ehle..........the yellow pages scene: I guess it was fascinating in the contrast between Blake and the salesman........and ridiculous the way the guy did his regular spiel (sp?) even making another appointment...........bizarre.....Now that I think about it......Bill Murray in his living room kindof evoked the same kind of feeling in Broken Flowers.

I'm wondering about the church bells and choir music.

I wonder 'bout all the bells and whistles myself, then sometimes I just wander.....
