Maurice Chevalier had the same problem (later vindicated) - the thought was he had too much freedom of movement not to be a collaborator. So it might have been the visible, rather than the single woman, who ended up being targeted (although young single women obviously had special issues to navigate).

Chevalier also performed for the Nazis when most all of the French performers refused. Vindicated? The French have vindicated far worse than him. He was a collaborator.

I want Wolf's take on the Resident Evil films. Marc, if he's around, give him a few minutes to talk about them on Couch With A View.

The Resident Evil flicks were decent in a horror movie sense, but zombie-wise, it sucked. the whole morphing zombie thing...ugh. it did stick with the games....somewhat. milla jovovich definitely made the films, i think if it weren't for her, they woulda flopped. can't wait for the next one to be just as bad as the others. want a good zombie film? go watch "Zombie" or "Day of the Dead".

I agree that Milla Jovovich was the main reason to watch the films, but what's wrong with morphing? It's become the new, hot thing in zombie films and it works for me. Shaun of the Dead used it to good effect, in a comic vein, of course, but I liked the idea of turning around to find your comrade ready to bite your face off.

LSDwolf speaking: morphing is all fine and dandy in a horror flick, but not in my zombie movie. a zombie turning into a creature that can scale walls and impale people with it's tongue just isn't a zombie movie. i don't want 'new, hot things' in my zombie films. Land of the Dead was a slight step up in that the zombies started to 'learn'. but that's all i want. just gimme headshots and decapitations in my zombie flicks and i'm happy.Shaun of the Dead is a great movie, nice mix of romance and comedy with a dash of zombies. that's one thing i like the most about zombie films is the feel of utter hopelessness, such as u'r "comrade ready to bite your face off".

I admit the morphed dogs were a bit much, but the first Resident Evil was a classic of the genre in my opinion. I'm not a Romero purist at all. I want a little fright, not just ennui.

LSDwolf: you can have u'r fright without a bunch of ennui. the new "dawn of the dead" for example, those zombies were pretty damn scary, moving fast and hideous. it's the hopping zombies that are completely stupid. like i said earlier, resident evil is a decent horror flick, but as a zombie film it blows. 28 days later is in the same vein as resident evil and i thought it was WAY better.

I didn't like 28 Days Later at all. The premise of pure rage as the contagion did not work for me at all and the movements of the survivors through the city seemed motivated by the needs of the plot, not the characters.

LSDwolf: 28 days later was a great 'zombie' flick. it had one major ingredient that "RE" lacked. the inability for the survivors to get along. that's another one of the scariest things in zombie movies, even if u'r comrade doesn't 'turn' he still wants to rip u'r face off. if u can trust u'r human counterparts, who can u trust? another hopelessneses u must face. i disagree that the survivors movements were plot needs and not characters.

Speaking of Zombies, we watched Monster tonight. Me, for a second time, the birthday-boy S-Man his first. The most I got from him was, what a great performance from Theron. The most I got out of a second viewing (2 years after all the hooplah) was, what a GREAT performance from Theron. I seriously consider this one of the all-time best performances in screen history. Also, the film, while flawed, is such a wonderful entry into the somewhat sacred film canon of Love Stories.

From zombies to Monster. uh...ok...guess I'll have to see it. A zombie love story perhaps?

Uh. . . whatever. Zombies are a kind of "Monster" Movie, no? I didn't think I'd have to spell out my lead in to and away from the posts. But by all means, please, see one of the greatest screen performances of all time.
