I finished the new Harry Potter book last night so I can sleep when I go home tonight. I thought it was her strongest since the third book and I enjoyed it very much. There are some very powerful scenes in this one. Now I just have to wait a couple of years for the conclusion.

Because of a special request from the moderator of this forum,; The book about Louis B Mayer that I read was Merchant of Dreams by Charles Higham. It was very informative and readable. Around the same time I read a biography of Samuel Goldwyn. For two Jews who grew up around the same time in Canada and ended up at the top of the same business, there couldn't be two more different personalities.

See Gary, you've already taught me something I never knew. That they were both from Canada!

Now I have to search through my junk to find the new book on Mayer.

I shall return. Cool

I think it's Lion of Hollywood, The Life and Legend of Louis B Mayer, by Scott Eyman.

Stick around Marj, I'll teach things you never dreamed of. Wink

Mayer was born in Minsk and as an infant his family emigrated to St. John New Brunswick where he grew up and lived till he was in his 20's. I believe Goldwyn first lived in the States, but his family moved to Canada when he was very young. I think he lived in Ontario, but I'd have to check it out.

There's a Canadian game called Curling. That's something I can teach you that you've never dreamed of. .

What do you mean, a Canadian game? The Scots have been playing it since the 16th Century. Marge, don't listen to him.

Not to worry Yambu, I never do. And I just happen to have curled myself, back in the days when skated.

Yeah, but they never win anymore. You think I should teach her Lacrosse instead?

I have been away and just got caught up with past posts.
How depressing is Never Let Me Go?
That is not the word I would use to describe it. Sad. Heart breaking. But not depressing and if you asked me to explain the difference I don't know if I could.
It is like a puzzle with the author doling out the pieces a bit at a time. All the "action" takes place "off screen" so no graphic details which leaves it up to us to imagine what happens.
The book is extremely thought-provoking and I can't wait to discuss it when you all have finished.
I am reading the new Harry Potter now and listening to music, not a book, when I am in the car but next on my list are Tears of the Giraffe. Extremely Close and Incredibly Loud. As for music I recommend Chavez Ravine by Ry Cooder.

Cool! Your a Ry Cooder fan? Is this the same Ry Cooder who used to be connected to The Blasters? Or am I getting my Bands mixed up?

Yeah, I understand that it's going to be a year and a half before she starts the last book. But then she's got a small baby in the house too, so I can understand her wanting to take a break. Besides, it will take that long or longer, for the film versions to catch up just to Book 6.

I've started it for the second time, already. I noticed some inconsistencies with the past story line on ther first read through, but I'm not noticing them now. Course, I haven't gotten very far this second time yet. Wish I would have made notes the first time. My memory is about as long as my thumbnail-and thats damned short! LOL!

I AM glad she stopped doing all of the re-caps this time around. That's alot of what made book 5 so long.

Dave and Phil Alvin were in THE BLASTERS, not Ry Cooder.
