I think we're so frightened by what we don't know about cancer (and I think that's a lot), that we jump at every possible cause. There was a whole scare over cel-phones and cancer a few years back.
I was going to type something along these lines but you beat me to it, so I'll just co-sign.
A few weeks ago, I'm at the doctor, we're talking about my general health, etc. I smoke right around a pack a day, so I'm expecting the same "smoking=bad" speech that I hear all the time. The doctor is more concerned with my soda intake than the amount of cigarettes that I smoke. According to her, drinking more than one or two 20oz sodas per day is worse for me in the long run than if I continue to smoke the pack/day that I do now. Yes, the smoking is bad for me, but, not as bad as has been portrayed, says she. I was suprised.
FYI, Mountain Dew™ is harder to give up that cigarettes. |

Happy father's day to those of you who are happy fathers.
It's also the anniversary of the first baseball game in 1846. |

Your doctor seems to be worried about your developing Type II Diabetes.
Just curious - but is it that hard to switch from regular sodas to DIET sodas which contain no sugar? |

Diet sodas are the root of all evil. Sugar's evil, but Sugar substitutes are just hateful. |

I drink sugar substitutes, I have kidney pains for hours, so no diet drinks.
She didn't say I was a high risk for Type II Diabetes. Besides cigs and soda, I'm relatively healthy. I'm not overweight, I excercise (not enough, mind you), my diet is relatively well-balanced, etc. My reason for going to the doctor was that I had this throat infection that absolutely would not go away. I was on antibiotics for like two months straight to no avail. She's trying to figure out why meds aren't working, she says too much caffeine and high amounts of sugar (so does fast food, processed food, etc., btw) weaken the immune system, etc., and that's more than likely why I seem to be some kind of sick nearly all the time. Too much soda. Sure enough, I cut back to like two sodas per day, I'm better. Intense headaches for a few days, but I'm cool now. |

Thanks Syd, you are the first and probably last to wish me a happy father's day. Of course I'm away from home so that doesn't help. I'll probably get a Happy Father's Day card from my son around September. |

I knew someone would say that. I think they are evil too. How about we just stick to WATER, herb teas?? |

New attitude. I've let my job dictate way too much of my life lately. I got a few things off my chest, had a long talk with myself, and that seemed to clear the cobwebs out. Plus, summer always makes me think of my characters. Mine is a summer book. How's your new writing endeavor going? |

marilyn --
well, i read and re-read what i had written and have decided to follow another course. same intro, same characters, same opening setting, but the protagonist will be pursuing a different route than what was originally planned for.
'course, could be another way of stopping myself, i have that history, but i believe that i will adhere to this change of plan. it will force me to use my imagination. the original course would have followed along a line that was too autobiographical. wouldn't have needed to think and create as i went along and that is, essentially, why i feel the urge to write. i just have to learn not to make it too easy to do. must learn something that i have yet to. |

I had strep throat back in January, for which I took a 10-day course of a broad-spectrum antibiotic. Funny thing is, I had a low-level sore throat and swollen lymph glands for a month afterwards.
Finally I went to see my good friend Gabrielle, a doctor of Chinese medicine. She treated me for about an hour and a half with acupuncture -- needles directly into my lymph glands, which admittedly ain't no party -- and gave me some herbs to mix in with green tea. Two days later my sore throat cleared up and I've been fine ever since.
I advocate a common sense approach to healing, combining allopathic and alternative medicine as it fits into your life. Notice that even I went the straight and narrow allopathic route the first time I woke up and couldn't swallow. Antibiotics are supposed to be the cure-all for something as "simple" as strep. Problem is, viruses and infections these days are stronger and more vile than they've ever been. |
