From the Chicago Sun-Times today:

Quote:
Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) refused to apologize Wednesday for comments he made on the Senate floor comparing the actions of American soldiers at Guantanamo Bay to Nazis, Soviet gulags and a ''mad regime'' like Khmer Rouge leader Pol Pot's in Cambodia.

YEAH, DICK!!!!!

Marilyn,

I had no idea you were married.

What other personal details have you withheld?

And please don't let it happen again.

Oops. I guess I did. It's been 11 years since I had a marriage, and it only lasted 6 years.

I'm not trying to change the world here, but everytime I see this construction it yanks me (no pun intended) right out of the sentence. Can't we all agree that the logical construction is, "I do not give a shit/toss/fig/etc." Similarly, "I couldn't care less," makes more sense than, "I could care less."

The first person to say, "Who gives a shit," gets a tight slap. I have no idea what a tight slap is, but it is a term my Malaysian wife uses all the time.

This might be American usage, Jeremy, but it's correct on this side of the pond. Think of giving someone a hard time.

Jeremy, I do not give neither a toss nor a fig and wouldn't expect you to not do the same. Ya know?

So you still won't admit it's just plain wrong.

You can give someone shit. It's hassling someone. Pretty common slang term.

Lane Smith, 69; TV, film, stage actor dies

LOS ANGELES -- Lane Smith, a longtime character actor who played a small-town district attorney who crossed words with Joe Pesci in ''My Cousin Vinny,'' died Monday. He was 69.

Mr. Smith, who also played Richard Nixon in the TV movie ''The Final Days'' and Daily Planet editor Perry White in ''Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman,'' died at his home in Los Angeles, according to his wife, Debbie Benedict Smith.

Born in Memphis, Mr. Smith appeared on numerous TV shows and in films such as ''The Legend of Bagger Vance'' in 2000, "The Mighty Ducks" and "The Hi-Lo Country." He appeared in the original stage production of ''Glengarry Glen Ross'' and the revival of ''One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.''

Besides his wife, Mr. Smith is survived by his son Robbie, 18; a brother and sister, and a 19-year-old stepson.

I remember Marilyn saying something about an ex-husband on the NYT forum. I guess we've both been posting quite a while.
