Since this was one of his early films, my expectation was to find some amateurishness or naivete (which I did find in the earlier scenes of his later movie La Strada). But I thought I Viteloni is a smooth, unjarring, and mature work. |

For all Fellini Heads with Sundance Channel:
Quote: FELLINI: I'M A BORN LIAR
directed by Damian Pettigrew
Feature
Visionary, fantasist and cinema giant, Italian filmmaker Federico Fellini was a notoriously unreliable commentator about his own work. With footage from a 1993 interview Fellini granted weeks before his death, Damian Pettigrew's documentary revisits the life and career of the creator of LA STRADA, LA DOLCE VITA and 8 1/2. Excerpts from his best-known films and insight from Donald Sutherland (FELLINI'S CASANOVA), Terence Stamp (SPIRITS OF THE DEAD) and cinematographer Giuseppe Rotunno (AMARCORD) attempt to decode this unique artistic enigma. R (AC, AL, BN) CCAP/Stereo/Letterbox/Subtitles (2002) Color (105 mins)

Censored, can you hold up just a bit? I had the joy of watching both Ossessione -- thanks for the recommendation! -- and I Vitelloni last night and have been formulating thoughts on them. Give me a little more time, please. |

if those who haven't cued up the list you suggested by now, then... yeah, we've got problems...
this is the inherent difficulty with directors fora (particularly when you're dealing with a relatively sophisticated selection). accessibility is somewhat limited and the draw is only for the few as opposed to welles, hawks or huston, for example.
but fellini is a GREAT director, a visionary of sorts, an influence which far exceeds his ouvre. surely, we can generate some interest in his major work, at least...
even if you can't (or don't want to go for the rental) surely you've seen a fellini film and can make some contribution even if it's suck/not suck. |

Censored,
Generally, I think it's a good idea to start a new movie on a Monday. But I wouldn't mind if we decided what we were going to start discussing then. It would give me time to get to the video store (I kept the Bergman Magic Flute out for two extra weeks, so I'll have to go to other stores for a Fellini). |

I will definitely be contributing to discussions of La Strada, Nights Of Cabiria and the rest. Despite ehle's great review for I Vitteloni, I may not have the time to watch it. I've seen all the other Fellini's. |

I am currently in dispute with Netflix as they say they sent it last week, but I have not gotten it yet! So - I may have to go to my local BB or Hollywood video this weekend. So - I guess don't wait for me. Figures the one time I actually try to participate....... |

can i suggest we move along to LA STRADA on monday...
those still waiting for I VITELLONE can still comment at any time as should be the case with any of the films. after all, we're not fascisti.
also, i would strongly recommend the inclusion of IL BIDONE which is available thru netflix and probably greecine. it's a powerfull story full of fellini preoccupations. |

this is from a few days back, but hey, i've only gotten here.
lady wakasa, bordwell (and thompson) have two major books: film art (more like a film dictionary) and film history. while nice, they're too much of the textbook variety to sit back and enjoy. instead, i'd recommend the oxford history of world cinema (ed. nowell-smith) for essays that combine history and some theory, and oxford guide to film studies (ed.s hill and church-gibson) for an overview of pretty much all film theory. it'll give you a more general idea, so then you can go out and read the more specific theory texts, which usually come in handy collections like film theory and criticism (ed.s mast, cohen, braudy), film theory (ed.s stam and miller) or movies and methods (vol. 1-2, ed. nichols). hope that helps.
i'm back. or at least i'll try to be, since fellini's one of my all-time favorites. |
