| The language does not really bother me. It took a bit to get used to it, but now I wouldn't have it any other way. I must admit that at times I am not quite sure what EB is saying though - he strange mixture of western and butchered shakespeare is a little hard to follow. |

I love Deadwood and often find the language almost Shakespearean, especially, EB and Al. Their monologues are as rhythmic as any iambic pentameter from Shakespeare - Their metaphors can be almost impenetrable.
And for memorably funny one liners you can't beat EB or Jane. I am so glad she is back.
About the use of all the swearing - I was kind of worried the first episode because it seemed as if there was even more swearing than last year - it was starting to be gimmicky. Especially Trixie. every other word is fuck or some variation. I do not remember her swearing so much last season. Overall she seems much angrier and more outspoken.
I thought it was interesting that Alma used the little girl as her excuse for not leaving Deadwood - the fact that Bullock didn't mention the child when he asked Alma to leave. I think the governess is going to become a very dangerous player in upcoming episodes.
Whenever I watch Deadwood, I want to remember so much of the dialogue - not let them slip away. That was the same way I felt about the dialogue in The Wire. They both utilize an idiosyncratic patois that for me adds to the authenticity of the story and the characters. |

In DEADWOOD, the swearing is absolutely poetic. I've never hear the word "cocksucker" sound so visceral and "motherfucker" so musical.
Whether its authentic to its time or not doesn't matter. We're talking about energy here, gutlevel fucking energy. The beauty of art is it doesn't need to be exact. Its imperfections can be more beautiful than its perfectness.
I don't go to the movies (or good tv) for a precise simulation of reality. I go to the movies for a hyper reality. If I want reality, I'll throw open my window. |

| Without wishing to get out of my depth, I am aware that there is a lot of speculation as to how the Elizabethan accent sounded . Judithannie's reference to iambic pentameter in Deadwood is interesting. Americans reciting Shakespeare are often perceived to lack credibility or authority, but there is no doubt that certain American accents have a natural rythm and a way of fully pronouncing words that seems quite suited to it Shakespearean English. |

Hi all
I'm new here, so I don't know the rules but I'll ask anyway...
Don't you think Bill Maher Show is getting less and less "ear-catching" ? Last Friday I found myself flipping channels during that show.. is it just me, or Bull ran out of ideas ? |

AZKaban, welcome. I think Maher has his on and off shows. I don't think he is faltering.
As to the rules here, there are none except that you have to be very critical of other's opinions except mine, which should be met by a chorus of hear, hear! |

| The Shield was riveting as usual tonight. Glenn Close is so fine an actress that you don't even notice how good she is. And I love her in that black slack suit. I regret going home and missing the episodes, but maybe I'll get lucky and have one of the stations pick it up. |

Hi AZK. I think you may have caught the all-conservative episode, where all his guests were right-wingers and they even shipped in right-wing student groups from local colleges to sit in the audience. I thought it was an interesting experiment, but yeah, it didn't pack the usual punch.
Last night's episode was the all-liberal episode featuring the Oreos -- Profesor Cornel West, Alec Baldwin and Whoopi. Jesse Jackson even made an appearance, trying to explain his support of both Terri Schaivo's parents and Michael Jackson. Dude was all over the map and looked like he's not sleeping much.
Best joke of the night was during New Rules when Bill was talking about the finger found in a container of Wendy's chili:
"Good thing it wasn't a whole hand, or the Senate would be passing a resolution right now to keep it alive." |

Deadwood was fucking brilliant tonight. More happens in the background of a particular scene on this show than in an entire hour on the networks..
Had to laugh at Docs parting caution to Bullock and Al: "Pithy and civil." Brad Dourif is grat. Everyone is great. |

I saw this week's Real Time. And I agree Bill Maher's New Rules was to die for. I don't think I've stopped laughing all weekend! I don't think I can ever look at a Wendy's sign again. Just as well, since I've never eaten there anyway.
I applaud him for trying to do the show with a conservative audience. And they seemed to enjoy it. But realistically it's gotta be a real ball breaker to try to do. |
