I rememeber seeing The Night they Raided Minsky's when I was thirteen, I found it distinctly horny. But then at that age...
Oddly, it featured a surprisingly good turn from the British comedian, Norman Widom, whose career in the UK at that time had all but come to an end. Norman Wisdom was responsible for a series of sentimental comedies made in the fifties in which he always played the downtrodden everyman who eventually triumphed over unfeeling bureaucracy or authority figures.
Even more oddly, because of this, Norman Wisdom's films were one of the few sanctioned for showing in communist Albania. It is only in the recent, times that it has become widely known that Norman Wisdom was undoubtedly the most famous and popular person in Albania. |

Stop talking to yourself Doug.
I see the Wallabies got lucky at Twickenham the other day. |

jeremy--The Night They Raided Minsky's was not only notable for Norman Wisdom. It was an utterly charming exercise in nostalgia, with a lovely, very sexy turn by Britt Ekland (currently being embodied by Charlize Theron in the TV movie about Peter Sellers) and wonderfully evocative direction by William Friedkin pre-French Connection and Exorcist, and way pre-career burnout. |

Just noticed that Marilyn had already taken time to praise the woefully underappreciated and all-but-forgotten Minsky's. It should be rediscovered for the utter gem that it is. |

And lest we forget: the poster for The Night They Raided Minsky's was drawn by Frank Frazetta. |

Minsky's
Yes, sorry for the confusion Billy, I was carrying on a thread from A Couch With View . I posted here by mistake. I guess I was momentarily disorientated by the memory of the effect those burlesque girls had on my teenage self. |

Karl Rove was the "surprise" selection of Barbara Walter's Most Fascinating People of 2004 on TV last night.
If I were a Republican, I would have found him almost warm and fuzzy - amazingly charming.
But now I find him even more scary. |

The future of social protest (from Frank Rich's column in the Dec 9 NYT):
Quote: In tune with the "moral values" crusaders, the Web site for the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has obscured and downplayed the important information that condoms are overwhelmingly effective in preventing sexually transmitted diseases. (A nonprofit organization supporting comprehensive sex education, Advocates for Youth, publicized this subterfuge and has been rewarded with three government audits of its finances in eight months.) |

But now I find him even more scary. All I can add to that is: "Not many people know it, but der Fuhrer vass a terrific dancer." -- Max Leibkind |
