| Bill Weeden, originally cast as the hot leading man in "A Quiet Place, " was edged out by director Jon Krasinski so that he could get all the intimate scenes with his extremely attractive leading lady Emily Blunt (also his real life wife, the lucky sod). How's that for segue? Anyway, I found AQP to transcend its horror packaging and emerge as a fine and notably original work of sci-fi familial drama and blood chilling suspense. The core concept is carefully thought out and rendered with a plausibility that is often lacking in monster movies. A couple puzzling details, like where their electricity was coming from, but these are quibbles and I may have missed an explanatory shot or two due to my chattering teeth and swabbing cold sweat. |

| "Hereditary" is a wonderfully well-made horror film but it's anti-entertainment. This brilliantly acted exercise in psychological meltdown is unpleasant almost from start to finish, and with no one to root for, it's not cathartic. However, I'm glad I saw it because the acting by Toni Collette, Alex Wolff, Ann Dowd, and Gabriel Byrne is so great. Collette in particular takes the role of a hysterical mother, which could have with no effort at all gone way over the top, and makes it believable every step of the way. She should be given an Oscar nod. The supporting cast, including newcomer Milly Shapiro, is perfect down the line. But the film is, as my moviegoing companion put it, "excruciating." I couldn't wait for it to be over, but hey, I couldn't look away from the screen for an instant. Excruciating, yes, but never boring |

Toni Collette is wonderful. Milly Shapiro is very impressive as the daughter. I wish she had a bigger role.

Alex Wolff is also superb. His dinner table duet with Collette is astonishing. |

| No couple of review comments has ever made me more ambivalent about seeing a film. LoL. I think what tips me finally toward seeing it tomorrow is the apparent kerfuffle over the ending. Which I don't know anything about, so mum's the word. |

At last a thoughtful and intelligent movie which takes its subject seriously. Paul Schrader's "First Reformed" takes on the painful and conflictual spiritual journey of a pastor of a small church in Upstate New York. Exquisitely directed and with bravura performance of Ethan Hawke, the movie is thoroughly engaging and fully convincing.

I thought Book Club was good entertainment. I had expected it to be stupid....all about the stupid Fifty Shades of Grey books. Fortunately not. Mainly about very successful women and their variety of relationships with men: divorced and not interested, nothing serious...just hookups, widowed and watched over by children, married and in need of viagra. It was fun to see these 4 actresses together. Candace Bergen was the most comical. Jane Fonda on Netflix’s Grace and Frankie had me laughing till it hurt.
As for the most inspiring movie about a woman: RBG is not to be missed. Not only was she a beautiful and happily married woman. She was a trail blazer and someone to admire completely. Ruth Badger Ginsburg. |
