"John Dies at the End," another film from the director who gave us the inspired loopiness of "Bubba Ho-Tep," delves into that deep vein of silliness previously mined by such films as "Big Trouble in Little China" and "Buckaroo Banzai: Across the 8th Dimension." IOW, there are other beings in parallel universes seeking to bust their way into our world and who will meet up with laid-back and deadpan heroes who haven't the slightest idea what they're doing. Paul Giamatti, Clancy Brown, and some relative unknowns manage to uphold the formula pretty well and deliver an amusing spoof of the "alien invaders dissolved in a black goop" concept that propelled a season or two of the X-Files. Not a great movie, with occasional Cronenbergian digressions that may remind you of "Naked Lunch," and it lacks a comedic force like Bruce Campbell (who made Bubba Ho-Tep somehow transcend mere weirdness) - but the Earth does get saved and most of your questions will be answered, if you are sober enough to think of any. |

I might try John Dies At The End.
I have a Chinese friend whose son is just turning 3.
Can anyone rec any animation, or educational material, or Tv shows you think a 3 year old would enjoy.
I picked up some old Bugs Bunny classics.
I've been trying to get Mr. Magoo, since it has little dialogue.
I was going to pick up all the Disney features, but started off with Cinderella, Bambi and Dumbo -- just the first ones I found.
Cinderella is basically an old-fashioned romantic girl's movie, and it's also pretty dang slow. All of the side stuff with the mice and cat kind of wore me down, along with the cutie birds lending a hand (making the bed, etc.)
One advantage of Disney classics is that they all are both dubbed and subtitled in Chinese -- and if the kid likes them and views them a whole lot, he can always try English subs or original English with Chinese subs.
Doesn't necessarily have to be just for age 3, as I'm pretty sure the kid will age and be 4 and then 5 soon enough.
Any suggestions appreciated. |

I was going to recommend Dumbo. It's one of Disney's best and a memorable music soundtrack.
I seen a peanut stand
I seen a rubber band
I seen a needle that blinks its eye
But I done seen if ever seen
If I seen an elephant fly........ |

Dumbo is great, and quite surprisingly underrated. As is Pinocchio. They are both better and more inventive than the faves Cinderella, Lady and the Tramp, and Bambi (all of which are good too--well, Bambi not so much). |

Pinocchio is way too into its heavy Germanic sentimentality. Which is odd, since the source material, characters and settings are Italian. Bambi and Dumbo are just too cruel in their darkest moments. I think the only Disney film that really impresses me is Snow White. You can still feel the excitement of the company pushing animation farther than it had ever gone. Unfortunately they churned that one out two more times, under the names Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty, respectively. |

Pinocchio's my favorite animated film of all time. However, I would do Dumbo and Lady and the Tramp first since the kid's so young, and Pinocchio, Snow White and Cinderella a bit later. Don't overlook short subjects such as The Band's Visit, The Three Little Pigs and Clock Cleaners.
Edit: And Ferdinand the Bull and The Tortoise and the Hare. I'm not sure what a kid would make of Der Feuhrer's Face. You may wind up with a kid singing "Are ve not der master race?" which might give the wrong impression. |

Billy, I keep forgetting to tell you this. In one of the episodes of The Listener, there was a character who is sort of an Alzheimer patient in the hospital who looks very much like you. At first I thought it was you but then saw that he looked little older and a little different but not much. And he didn't commit the murder. |

What is The Listener?
The Listener is a Canadian TV production and I think it plays in the States too. The listener is a paramedic who has discovered that he is telepathic and is used by the police to solve crimes etc. He can hear people's thoughts. He's not that comfortable being a telepath though, but is happy to be of use to the crime stoppers. He tells very few people about his talent. It's a good show. I think it's in its fourth season. |

I'm watching Naruse's When a Woman Ascends the Stairs with a wonderful lead performance by Hideko Takamine. She had a supporting role in part III of The Human Condition but otherwise I apparently haven't seen her. If I want to see more, I'll have to watch more Naruse. Apparently she was his favorite leading lady. |
