Totally agree about Maggie Smith's explanation of her situation, with the uneasy interpreter and the confused girl listening...it did bring tears to my eyes. I'm going to recommend the film to my Indian friend Chitra--who saw the trailer with me when we went to "The Descendants"--but I'm not sure her husband would like it, since he found "Slumdog Millionaire" offensive (a Western view of the worst aspects of India). But he might like "Marigold Hotel." I'll leave it to Chitra to decide.

Anyone who saw A Separation and loved it: there's another Iranian film called This is Not a Film. It's a must see. 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Briefly it's a video diary of a filmmaker about to be sent to prison in Iran, banned from making any more films. He's pictured in the upscale apartment he shares with his family. This film (not) has a light touch showing us the filmmaker on the phone with his lawyer, eating breakfast, looking out his window at fireworks, talking to a student trash collector on an elevator, and reenacting the film he was not allowed to make. There are also clips of his films. An iguana and a little barking dog have roles that lighten things even more. I came away wondering: doesn't Iran have anything better to do than put this guy in jail?

Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom is absolute magic. A masterpiece.

I notice that not only does Rotten Tomatoes have no reviews of Cowgirls 'n' Angels, the Numbers doesn't seem to know it exists. So apparently I'm the molder of world opinion on this movie. My rating is 6.5 of 10, so it's at 65%.

The Numbers seems to be slow on obscure May releases this year.

Sure they do; executing people who don't follow their twisted religious laws, shooting peaceful protesters, treating women like slaves, supporting terrorists around the world....They are busy doing a lot of wonderful things. Sad

Are you at Cannes? Didn't know it had reached our fair shores. The cast looks to be quite the ensemble of talent.

Hope to see it this weekend. I'm not a big Wes Anderson fan, but the trailer makes it look amazing.

"Limited" release, drat!

Snow White & the Huntsman, though I'm not a fantasy buff, looks interesting. A.O. Scott's description (including Bob Hoskins et al. digitally shrunken into dwarfhood) makes me want to check it out.

My theater's been running the Moonrise Kingdom trailer for a couple of months, and I've been drooling over it for a while. Hope it gets here soon.

Since it turns out I do not have another paycheck coming to me from the spring, I will not be seeing it this weekend after all. Smile

Hopefully in a couple of weeks.

The MK trailer looked questionable to me, kind of annoying really. But I only saw it on my computer screen.

I really liked The Royal T's; mostly liked the somewhat slight Bottle Rocket; foundRushmore entirely okay but way overpraised; thought Life Aquatic was a misfire; and Darjeeling Ltd, was awful.
Not really sure what to expect with Moonrise K.

I saw the "Moonrise Kingdom" trailer a few months ago and it looked like it could be great or could be lousy. But a movie with both Bill Murray and Bruce Willis has to at least be interesting, so I've been watching for it. (Still want to see "The Avengers" first, though.)

I'm going to have to research Moonrise Kingdom. This is the first I've heard of it. But I'm so glad that Marigold Hotel is doing so well. It says a lot for the influence of the baby boomers.

Also looking forward to seeing Hysteria and Mahler on the Couch, although I think I'm going to have to see the latter in DVD. They put it back into the theater for one week, and we didn't get there fast enough.

Btw, I ought to add, these are films I'm interested in, not films I've read reviews about, something I try to avoid.

When we saw "Marigold Hotel," there was a trailer for "The Intouchables." I'd read that it's the most profitable film in French history, with a black actor who's the country's foremost celebrity at the moment. He plays an out-of-work guy who takes on the job of caretaker for an aging white quadriplegic, and of course they become best buds; it's based on fact. Looks like a good movie, but I didn't think it looked all that record-breakingly terrific. I'll try to see it, though, if only because I don't see enough French movies these days.

Almost exactly describes my ranking of WA pics, except I would put The royal T's and Bottle R. about even. There's an unbridled looniness about BR that I always find irresistible, small change though the movie might be.

Heard nothing about Mahler on the Couch. A double feach with Lulu on the Bridge?
