Petty had the real (though the billing didn't indicate it) leading role in A League of Their Own, one øf the two movies Madonna was actually pretty good in. Petty herself was adequate but not as interesting as her supporting cast.

I thought Petty came near to ruining League, myself, and have had no interest in seeing her in anything after that. But, yes, it was a role Madonna was entirely ept in. In contrast to most other roles.

I forget which movie this was but a fencing instructor or maybe just a fencer, female, came into the movie and she was unbelievably bad. Then I wondered, "Is that Madonna?" It was a very small role so I didn't think it would be her, but it was. Not laughably bad, hysterically bad. I'm going to google her so I can look up the movie.

Gary--It was Die Another Day, a James Bond movie. Now I've unfortunately got to see it.

Yeah, I looked it up. She's in very little of the movie. Only one scene, I think. Sort of a cameo. Very Happy I hardly remember the movie. I get a lot of the Bond movies mixed up.

How can this be? They are all so different.

Arthur (the 2.0) is not a great film, nor are the performances standouts, nor does the plotline deviate in any way from the standard romcom, but somehow the comedic ideas and witty script made for an enjoyable couple hours. Brand is an innately peculiar and funny person, which helps, too.

Madonna also had a small role in Girl 6 as the owner of a rival, sleazier, phone-sex operation. She was okay. A bit spooky. The movie had serious problems, but she wasn't one of them.

Marc, I have to disagree with you. Rock n' Rolla only sucked 95% of the time. The other 5% was at least watchable. Maybe only 3% but why quibble.

Bad, annoying voice-over, badly written, badly acted, badly paced, badly plotted and of course, badly directed.

Thandie Newton gave a performance that could have been given by Madonna.

Sherlock Holmes was a huge step up. Though that might not be saying much, But I had a very good time watching SH. Some of the most well done action fight scenes and some terrific visuals especially at the end with the unfinished bridge on the Thames. Good performances by the two main characters and a twisted but very entertaining script.

I have to agree, Gary. And I think your short, concise review is right on!

The Italian Straw Hat. René Clair's 1927 silent version of a well-regarded 1851 stage farce. On a groom's wedding day (updated to 1895), he's taking his carriage to his wedding when his buggy whip gets stuck in a tree. While he goes off to retrieve it, his horse spies a straw hat on a bush, and starts eating the hat. This belongs to a married woman, who is off in the bushes with her lover. The lover finds the groom's new house and threatens to start breaking all his new furniture if the groom doesn't produce an identical hat and if the groom reveals the liaison, the lover will challenge him to a duel. Complications ensue as the groom tries to find a rare replacement hat and also get married. Meanwhile, we get social satire from the wedding party.

I found this mostly tedious with a little inspired comedy. René Clair's French farces may simply not connect with me; I didn't like À Nous la Liberté and I found Entr'acte mostly tedious as well. I actually liked this one a bit better. It's a pretty funny situation which I suspect might work well as a sound film. I did like Albert Préjean's lead performance as the harried groom. I did wonder why the groom didn't pay a visit to the gendarme station a half-block away from his house, but if he did, you wouldn't have a movie.

(Note: I love I Married a Witch, which Clair also directed, so it may just be his French films that don't connect.)

I saw The Italian Straw Hat on stage (one of the first Winnipeg Theatre Company's productions). As a stage play it was a good frenetic farce. I went to see it because a young woman I was attracted to was in it. She was good and we did end up going out with each other a few years later.

And? And? What major Hollywood star did she become?

Your stories have become distressingly mundane.
