Rango looked fun, but I'll have to see it on the small screen.
Weed -- seriously? Have you spoken with those of the estrogental persuasion, regarding Mr. Depp? Apparently, they find him charming, in large numbers. I sort of liked the 90s Depp who did quirky roles like Ed Wood and Ed Scissorhands and Secret Window and 9th Gate and such. He seemed to have a knack for the eccentric outsider type. |

I like Depp mostly because he seems to enjoy his roles so much. I'm not a big fan of the Pirates series, but his Captain Jack is a delight. I'll never forget his entrance in the first movie, stepping off his sinking boat. |

I think his indie reputation is a little absurd. Other than his partnership with Tim Burton (who isn't indie and isn't really all that eccentric, to my mind), he tends to make chick flicks and family movies. So where'd he get the badass rep? |

The first one was terrific and he was a great Captain Jack. The ones that came after were not even close. |

Depp is almost always good, even when the movie isn't (admittedly, I've only seen a few).
good Depp:
2001 Blow – movie was fenh…
2000 Chocolat – movie was fenh
1995 Nick of Time – movie was fenh
1990 Edward Scissorhands - Didn't like the movie much at all (I seem to be the only one to feel that way), but he was good.
Terrific Depp:
2003 Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
1998 Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas – movie was a letdown, unfortunately
1997 Donnie Brasco - my favorite of his
1994 Ed Wood - a close second (and maybe the only Tim Burton movie I've really liked)
1993 What's Eating Gilbert Grape
Crummy Depp:
1999 The Astronaut's Wife – Lousy movie
And that’s all I’ve seen. I think for the most part he needs an unusual character to grab onto. |

Forgot about Donnie Brasco. He was terrific in that one, as well as the aforementioned Ed Wood. |

Hanna was entertaining and as was said earlier, well directed. The last 15 or 20 minutes were a little stretched but I liked the movie. Very good performance by the title character. Good last shot. |

Looks like they just wrapped up some good all-American screwing. Probably done atop that very flag. Yes, indeed.
Kind of funny how the righties always like to rip Hollywood, yet their great idol is a total product of the system (and used what he learned there to good effect). |

Young Nancy Reagan always looks like a cross between Claudette Colbert and Patricia Neal to me. Well, a dime store knock-off of a combination between the two. |

What was your opinion of the Blanchett performance? |

Unfortunately The Adjustment Bureau plays 4 times this week and all at 6:30, which isn't the most convenient time.
Wonder why they couldn't slot it in once at 8:45 (the later showing). But I think they simply aren't that organized or attentive. I could make 6:30 but it either means rushing, missing dinner, or missing basketball. And it's not even dark outside at 6:30.
Actually very frustrating that there is almost nothing at 8:45 (all week at a dozen cinemas) that I really want to see.
Except the restored Metropolis, but that's long. And a film I've seen many times, including the restored version once. And Sunset Blvd. -- a film I also know well and can pop in at any time.
The Hungarian film Control is playing and that was a fun film about the ticket takers in the Budapest subway. There also is a film by Christina Godz. I liked her film Kameleon , which I saw at the SIFF two years back. But this earlier film (2005) is called Just Sex and Nothing Else. Sounds okay, but nothing special.
Sigh.
A rainy week, so a good time to see a film.
Wished they'd scheduled something decent in the prime slot ... |

An early report from a couple months ago:
Quote: Susan Sarandon, Matt Dillon, Willem Dafoe and Marisa Tomei are all bound for China this June ... as guests of the 14th Shanghai International Film Festival, organizers said on Thursday.
... with Oscar-winning director Barry Levinson as the head of the jury, already is looking more star-studded than previous editions.
Levinson is indeed heading the jury and they'll have a screening of Rain Man where he'll be present. Maybe I'll show up and ask why Hoffman's old friend Bill Weeden wasn't in the film.
They're excited that Rupert Murdoch and his concubine Wendy Deng are attending the opening ceremony. |
