Scoop is the only Woody Allen movie of the last decade that I have not seen.

Joe--I not only understand, I agree completely with you, though I thought VCB was a true return to form and YWMATDS was a very very good if not completely successful movie. Match Play was overpraised IMO, and Whatever Works and Hollywood Ending were probably Allen's two all-time worst.

I liked Match Point, despite Scarlett Johanssen not being able to to pull off her part. Crimes and Misdemeanors is overpraised. It's half a great movie; the Woody Allen and Alan Alda parts are trivial compared to Martin Landau's dilemma.

Completely agree re the overpraise for Crimes and Misdemeanors. Woody Allen films tend to be overpraised more often than not, and Oscar-awarded unduly (Mira Sorvino in Mighty Aphrodite being the most obvious example). Once in a blue moon an Allen movie is underpraised. Manhattan Murder Mystery was a lot better than it was given credit for, and Husbands and Wives was one of Woody's best, but you'd never guess it from what the critics said.

Billy - I totally agree with you about Manhattan Murder Mystery. I'd have to watch Crimes and Misdemeanors again before I could comment. Match Point is, I think, one of Allen's better recent movies. Quixotically, it does have a similar theme to C&M.

I think it's interesting that Allen's films began to suffer as he got older. So he removed himself. Apparently that made things worse, so back to acting he went. Wonder how this new film will fare.

Marj--You're right about Match Play being similar to C&M, but even more IMO it resembles a semi-remake of A Place in the Sun.

The Tree of Life has won the Palme d'Or at Cannes.

Bridesmaids has become an incredible smash, and Midnight in Paris is Woody Allen's biggest breakout hit in decades.

And--hip hip hooray!!!--the sheer ineptitude of the Pirates of the Caribbean series has finally caught up with it. The opening of the new episode is a severe disappointment and looks pretty woeful.

From Cannes, the films that sounded interesting to me:

We Need to Talk About Kevin -- Lynn Ramsey
The Artist (a silent film)
The Kaurismaki film

And with entries from Ceylan, Dardennes, Almoldovar, Malick, von Trier -- each of which won one of the main prizes -- it seemed like a very strong year at Cannes.

It still sounds like a movie I will never want to see.

Here is a wonderful funny review of The Tree of Life. It also sums up my opinion of Malick.

So, Tree o Life won the Palm d'Or, Peter Fonda called Obama a traitor to our country, and Lars von Trier said he was a Nazi. I'm thinking they spiked the champagne with ketamine.

This, from Tony Macklin, made me LOL:

Quote:
Brad Pitt juts his lower lip as the father. He juts a lot. Jessica Chastain, as the mother, likes to splash water. There's a lot of water in the movie. Very visual. Hunter McCracken, as young Jack, looks wary a lot. He has a lot to be wary of -- the mystery of life and all that. Sean Penn, as middle-aged Jack, may have wandered onto the set looking for a bus. The actors do a lot of wandering.

Thanks for linking that, Gary.

Haven't seen it--never will--but The Tree of Life sounds like the most unwatchable movie since Synecdoche, New York.

LOVED Synecdoche, New York. To each his own.

Ebert (particularly post-cancer Ebert) is really funny when he dislikes something:

"The story might perhaps be adequate for an animated film for children, with Thor, Odin and the others played by piglets."

I predicted a couple weeks ago that this would be a film everyone would argue about. Let the games begin.
