I remember that one. Blue-sky floods are the worst.

Speaking of disasters, I recently read this plot description of "The Beaver," due for release in a month or two, starring Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster (who also directs):

Quote:
A troubled husband and executive adopts a beaver hand-puppet as his sole means of communicating.

I don't claim to have a working crystal ball, but vibrations from the astral plane are telling me that this might be really awful.
Supposedly, it was a hot script bouncing around Hollywood for years, And I amreally looking forward to posting about how eager I am to see "Mel Gibson in Jodie Foster's Beaver" over and over again until people are sick to death of the joke. Which should be.. right... NOW.

By the way, the official reason for the delay is because they expect big word of mouth coming off a film festival helping its opening, so they are using that route to publicize its release.

Leave it to Beaver.

The word "beaver" is going the way of the word "dike"--perfectly good words, now vaguely obscene and joke-prone. I'm sorry for real beavers (will they soon be known as "furry woodland creatures who put together tree limbs that block the flow of streams"?). I'm even sorry for Justin Bieber, but at least he won't be famous for more than another 14 minutes.

Just read in the paper today that a new government center in Fort Wayne, Indiana, might be named after a former governor, but although it's the "runaway favorite" name in the polls, the authorities aren't too sure. His name was Harry Baals.

I used to live in Corvallis, Oregon, home of OSU, aka the Beavers. And Oregon is officially known as The Beaver State. So my quota of beaver quips, jokes, innuendos, etc. was met long ago.

I'm not sure why the PTB think the film needs to be propelled into the spotlight via a film festival showing. And I don't think any big ones are scheduled between now and May, are there? Sundance is over. Cannes and Toronto are later than that, IIRC. The ways of the industry are mysterious to me.

Consider the possibility that they are putting lipstick on the corpse.

Though the new official word is Jodie Foster will be done shooting her new movie and available for press on the new date.

It's also reported to be the hot ticket at the SXSW, in late March. I guess they were hoping a build up from that.

Not only does the movie sound dreadful on the face of it, I can't stand Jodie Foster and I don't think, (aside from Aryan skinheads), anyone can stand Mel Gibson anymore.

I don't think this will be a box office smash even if it gets a distributor.

It already has a distributor. And as for Mel, well, we'll see. People who have been grade A assholes have made popular movies before.

Unless it gets excellent reviews, I'll pass.

It's not likely to make my list, either. But I intend to make fun of it as often as possible.

I'll drop in long enough to throw in with this lot...from name to concept to distribution hype attempt it's over for me before it begins...Mel should put on the shinny hat now.

Don't give up on it yet. I still love talking about "Joshua Logan's Fanny on a wide screen." Call me Beav(er) and/or Butthead.

Billy let's not forget Gary Oldman's directorial debut 'Nil by Mouth' which relied heavily on his experience as a drunk and user...these things have worked well for him as much as against.

Thinking more on True Grit (which is usually a sign of a good film) I was struck by how much more natural the elaborate language of the film sounded than the more bawdy language used in Deadwood. I don't know which better reflects the rality of the times, but I think True Grit has it in terms of truthiness. It felt right, whereas that of Deadwood felt forced.

True Grit may be moving up my list of the year's favourites.

I'm still looking forward to "Cowboys vs. Aliens." Though I may fit "True Grit" in somewhere.
