I wasn't saying Eisenberg did a bad job or anything -- it just didn't impress me, BHWDIK? Garfield was the standout perf, for me. If Inla and his materfamilias can take away more from TSN, more power to them, and once again a case of chacun a son gout.

To be annoyingly precise, it's A chacun son gout - To each his own (taste). The other means "Each has his own taste", which is not what is meant. |

bartist, hey, it's all so subjective. My initial response to TSN in the cinema was similar to yours. But once the screener arrived, it was impossible to avoid in Casa de inlareviewer, the infirm parent being, as noted, possessed by it (at least she's obsessed with a New Film, not, say, Just Between Friends, which I could happily never see again and still cite shot for shot). And, by default, it's rather grown on me, not unlike ivy on the Harvard walls. Also, now that it's gone almost overnight from Clearcut Front-Runner to Scrambling Second-Placer, my inevitable sympathies for the underdog clicked in. TKS easily touched and engaged me more immediately, no doubt. And now that's going to be a play. Hopefully there will be no onstage injuries or interminably extended preview periods, like that li'l Julie Taymor/Marvel Comics/genre-film tuner, reports of which leave me shaking my head in ironic wonderment. |

The apparent divergence between critics and filmmakers is particularly marked this year, with the former opting for the espresso and dark chocolate Social Network and the latter for rhubarb crumble and custard The King's Speech.

Blue Valentine left me in a stupor. A not interesting story, with fairly stereotypical characters, perfunctory flashbacks, and insistently ugly camerawork. I kept wanting to take hold of the damn camera and take a few steps back. A complete disappointment. Not sure what others are getting out of this film. I was slightly more than 100% disengaged (roughly 109%, I think).
The only thing I liked in the film was a charming little tune "You & Me" which turns out to be a demo from Cincinnati circa 1970 labeled Penny & The Quarters, a band no one can recall. Maybe they thought the demo recording matched the poor quality cinematography and further conveyed realism/sincerity/other. Good find on the tune by someone involved in the film. It sounds a bit like Charles and Inez Foxx
More on the song:

Edit: Just listened to the full song and it gives a definite Curtis Mayfield impression. A sweet little ditty.
There was another good brief scene also involving a song Gosling plays and sings while Williams dances. It felt kind of forced and artificial, but still made for a charming minute or two. |

I turned off the SAG Awards after 5 minutes. All the "I'm an actor" bits were just too precious. It was cringe-inducing and it made me embarrassed ever to have been a part of the profession. Then Alec Baldwin & Betty White botched their banter and I said I'm outta here. I'm happy for Colin Firth, though. I've been a fan of his going all the way back to "Another Country". Portman, too. |

The contrast between Gromit's and Weed's take on BV is stark enough to make me want to see it.
Inla -- know what you mean about multiple viewings sometimes yielding different impressions of a movie. Would be interesting, maybe, to watch TSN a decade from now and see how it does or doesn't hold up. |

Having become a full-blown portmaniac (Garden State, Closer, V for Vendetta, Boleyn Girl, Black Swan), I'm hoping this will open more widely than tomorrow's NY/LA release...

Agree that The Social Network was hard to like. I'm not sure that computer screens and drama mix. Which was sort of the challenge here. I assumed that Eisenberg's semi-autistic runs across the campus were an attempt to inject a little physical action into all the conference table/dorm room tete-a-tetes.
As for Clint doing J-Ed, I expect you'd get a different take than, say, Oliver Stone. |
