I haven't seen many films so far this year (still hope to see "Knight and Day" and "Toy Story"), but I did love "Robin Hood." And where's "Harry Potter and whatever-the-last-thing-is Part One"? That should have been out by now, shouldn't it?

Gary, I thought Knight & Day was a new release, but it seems to have departed the theaters here. Will look for it on DVD, later in the year.

Very very thankful that we have a $2 multiplex theatre not far from where I live that picks up the movies when they leave the first run venues. That's where I saw Knight and Day. They have a deal on Tuesdays...$7.49 for admission, a medium popcorn (actually too big) and a medium drink (also very large).

Bart, open up a discount theatre in Lincoln. It's time they had one.

Part I is coming out in November and Part II next July.

Thanks, Syd. I always expect new Harry Potters in the summer. (Though I still haven't seen the last one--I've got the DVD but haven't had a chance to watch it.)

I've heard a lot of second-run theaters are going out of business. Bart mentioned a while back, at the Elba forum, that his town's second-run had been demolished and the other theaters bought out by the soul-less Marcus company. (maybe you need to be soul-less to survive...)

I suspect the hasty release of DVDs, and large screens at homes, are hurting the second-run business.

Second-run theaters and second-hand bookstores used to be all over the place in New York, and now there are very few of either. The only theaters I know that run old movies are places like the Film Forum and MoMA's screening room that are patronized by real film buffs, and the only places to buy old books are thrift shops and, of course, the Strand.

I miss them, but I have to admit that it was a hassle trying to follow all the theater listings to try to catch an old Alan Bates film, and looking for a book I remembered from high school but was no longer available. DVDs and Amazon.com and eBay, et al., make things so much more convenient. (Though it's still nice to see a favorite movie on a big screen, once in a while.)

Billy--I'm glad the Walter Reade Theater is still there. My former apartment was a few blocks away, and I visited a few times.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World might be fun, but I haven't played a video game since Pac-Man. (well, I do play Chinese chess regularly, but that hardly counts).
SP v. World takes place in Toronto and some place called Canada.

Yeah, they bulldozed the second-run house here about 4 years ago. Partly, the University wanted the land (on the south edge of campus) and made them a pretty good offer. I think Winnipeg is smarter, and more preservation-minded, too. Lincoln bulldozes the minute a crack appears in the ceiling.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World got a solid review. I have no knowledge of any video game of that name, but the film sounds like fun.

Eat Pray Love also got a good review, with a particular nod to Richard Jenkins who the reviewer swore will get an Oscar nomination for this performance. Great cast overall.

Reviews for The Expendables swing from it being a great guy-flic to being a total piece of crap. I'll probably see it regardless of its crap-quotient, based solely on the cast and on the assumption that each star will get their moment to shine, along with their own in-jokes.

The actress who plays Scott Pilgrim's sister was on Craig Ferguson's show and said it's based on a graphic novel, not a video game, but there are video game elements. The clip looked rather interesting. Certainly unusual.

No more Michael Cera ever. He's a one-trick pony who needs to be lead back to the barn. And shot.
