TS3 doesn't have musical interludes, but it has moments that are every bit as poignant as TS2. Plus it's as exciting a story as you're likely to see. But of course it all comes down to the characters, and Woody, Buzz, Jesse et al are as developed as any flesh-and-blood actors, which is a weird thing to say until you remember that these guys have 15 years of backstories behind them. They're built on foundations of loyalty and friendship that feel genuine, because we've seen them evolve over three films. The in-jokes and sly references to past films are a hoot, and they reinforce the wonderful reality that these CGI creations are old friends.
The other advantage these characters have is even weirder: being CGI generated means they look the same as we remember. No age lines. Don't underestimate the familiarity quotient of seeing the exact same faces after so many years. In this respect, animation trumps reality. |

| See, I've never been as taken as most people seem to be with the characters of Buzz, Woody, etc. That's why my favorite moment in both of the first two was the song that basically had nothing to do with any of the aforesaid characters. |

| The thing I have for the Toy Story franchise comes from watching number 2 multiple times with my kids. It's brilliantly scripted, packed with clever writing and jokes, and I really got to know the characters after the 24th viewing. The film, and therefore the characters, feel like old friends. |

Outside of the climax, there was no reason to do the movie in 3-D. If they hadn't, I might have given it that extra half-star.
I refused to go see it in 3D for several reasons, the overhyped 3D push being the main reason. The 2D version was every bit as wonderful, IMO.
I gave it 4 stars just because I thought it completed the story from the first 2 movies. But even with that, TS2 is still my favorite of the 3, only because it worked so well on so many levels. |

Almost every single preview they showed before seeing Toy Story 3 was for 3D movies. The drudge they are throwing out there, just to make a 3D movie, was extremely disappointing. Disney's "Tangled", which is a Rapunzel based story, was one of the worst. Another called "Alpha and Omega" was so bad, throwing out cheesy song clips "Born To Be Wild" while two animated wolves falling in love fall over a cliff.
To me, this is just another reason why Hollywood attaches itself to the easy draw for those who don't care about quality.
Thank goodness Toy Story 3 was every bit as good as I expected it would be, to erase the shit that were the 3D trailers. |

Surprising considering Joss Whedon is one of the writers of the first movie. While the movie has a handful of writers listed under the "Story By" and "Screenplay By" credits, I believe he is unofficially credited with inventing the basic premise of the movie, i.e., seeing things from the toys' POV instead of the kid's. Typical Whedon: he works within a convention, but he turns it on its head. |

| I didn't know Whedon was one of the "Toy Story" writers, but somehow it doesn't surprise me. I love both I and II and am looking forward to seeing III, maybe next week. |
