I liked The Piano Teacher very much. And Time Of The Wolf is excellent. |

Quote: Maybe many here will prefer the violence, pace and scope of A Prophet, but I thought The White Ribbon was the superior and more artful film.
In any case The Secret of Their Eyes is rather silly soap opera-ish crime drama, and shouldn't even be in the convo. I'd rec passing on that; it's not badly made, just badly written, and some might enjoy it.
The White Ribbon was strong on black/white style and strong on implications of bad behavior.......leaving alot of questions to think about. A carefully constructed film. The Secret in Their Eyes was worth seeing because it was Argentinian. A Prophet ....I skipped because of the violence. My favorite foreign film this year is The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Two years ago....Departures. |

Betsy,
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo isn't violent. The version I saw sure was. |

Ebert's funniest review in some time IMO. And the movie sounds like a complete must to avoid. Intrigued? Click.

Add this from New York Magazine's David Edelstein:
"...a particular dress of Carrie’s cost 50 grand. But what’s the point of spending that much when the cinematographer, John Thomas, lights Sarah Jessica Parker to bring out the leatheriness of her skin? How did he manage to mummify the lovely Cynthia Nixon? Kim Cattrall, fresh off her witty, subtle work in The Ghost Writer, is costumed to look like a cross between (late) Mae West and (dead) Bea Arthur."
Sounds like a homophobe's dream come true. But a nightmare for the rest of us. |

Thanks Billy, Ebert's review was hilarious. I'm tempted to see this movie. |

Ebert's review also makes me somewhat interested in seeing the film--since it sounds like the perfect feather-light escapism for those of us who are dealing with daily all-too-real problems.
Besides, my sister has performed a couple of weddings for friends, having obtained a Notary Public license. That's all it takes. No problem for Liza, I'm sure. |

I'll wait for the rental. [As if I had a choice!]
I didn't like the first film and I doubt I'll like this either. Though I do give Chris Noth a lot more credit than Ebert does. It's the writer's who are at fault. Noth is a fine actor.
I suppose I can understand why some women love these movies. I loved the TV show. I loved it because of the writing, the wit and the often biting satire. Each show covered a theme within a larger one. But these films have jumped the shark and the some whales too. |

A Prophet is said to be violent......I suppose the type of violence I don't care for. Not that I care for any.........but I like the Dragon story and Lisbeth Salander. |

The violence in The Piano Teacher I found kind of depressing. I guess that was the point -- there was no redemption for her, no way to remedy whatever it was that had broken her in the first place. When someone says they liked that film (MARC). I'm always curious what it was they liked about it. I mean, I could say I liked the cinematography or the acting, but it would damning with faint praise because mainly I found it a horrible experience and wouldn't watch again. And I'm not usually a sunshine-and-puppies sort of filmgoer.
Though they have their place, too. |
