Colleague Pete Hammond offers up a clear-eyed analysis of the Racso race, including the pundit-exaggerated Battle of the Exes between Bigelow and Cameron, the uphill battle Up in the Air faces without an Editing nod, Mlle. Sidibe being a plausible Upset Spoiler should an (unlikely but not inconceivable) Sentimental Logjam transpire t'wixt First-Time Front Runner Bullock and Never-More-Loved Principal Threat Streep, and certainly his reiteration of what this corner has been dementedly repeating since the fall re: The Top Prize -- It's Anything Can Happen Year, which, given how few actual surprises Nomination Morning produced, would be, like, soah tewtally kewel.
LAT: Notes on a Season: Does Oscar still have a surprise in a season of twists and turns?

Julie & Julia is good for the segments with Julia. Freeman's Mandela is the only really developed character in Invictus, so if he grates on you, so will the movie. Matt Damon's nomination is really puzzling when people like Ryan Reynolds (Adventureland) and Anthony Mackie (The Hurt Locker) weren't nominated. |

All my faves of 2009 were released pre award season, in what used to be considered cinema puragtory of mid-late Summer. Gotta wonder if they consciously planned to shoot their loads earlier than usual, or was it sheer coincidence that these mid-year releases turned out to be the best?
True, I haven't seen current releases like Crazy Heart and a couple of other quality films, but my own Top 5 - The Hurt Locker, Tetro, The Informant, Inglourious Basterds, District 9 - have been digested so long ago that I'm starving for something great. |

I've seen seven of the Best Picture nominees, and all of them seem reasonable choices. Well, The Blind Side's a bit iffy, but I liked it quite a bit. An Education and A Serious Man haven't made it in the vicinity, and Precious looked like something I would actively dislike judging from the trailer and descriptions. I'd like to see Crazy Heart and The Last Station too, not to mention The Secret of Kells, which is apparently excellent. Of course, I'll try to locate as many of the short films as I can. |

It looks like An Education is opening at the Tinseltown Theater in Oklahoma City, which is easy to get to, on Friday so I may go to see it. Crazy Heart is opening at the Bricktown, which is in downtown Oklahoma City, which may be a difficult place to park. It's likely one or both may also be opening closer. I could drive 40 miles tomorrow to see Crazy Heart but I'm sure I can do better than that. |

An Education, The Blind Side, Precious and The Last Station are probably really good films, I just can't work up the motivation to see 'em. It's not like me, I usually run toward quality regardless of genre. Maybe as I matured I've developed more of a need for car chases and ass. |

I loved Andrea Arnold's short film Wasp.
But really disliked her feature debut Red Road.
Fish Tank?
I saw Fish Tank 2 weeks ago. It’s parallel in its storyline to An Education but this film is set in the projects in England. It’s a coming of age story about a troubled and volatile teenager with a hot, trashy, boozing mother ,who doesn’t give two cents to her two daughters. Mia, the teenager is played by a first time actress Katie Jarvis, is authentic in her portrayal of a frustrated 15 yr old (with a brain) living in a “no future” environment.
When her mother starts having an affair with a new man ,(Michael Fassbender) Mia’s world opens up. She’s introduced to different music, nature (he takes them on a trip outside the barren landscape they live in ) end up sharing a drink and eventually to sex. ( hot scene ) But, of course things get complicated.
Will she escape this hell hole? Is there hope? You will have to see , I won’t spoil it.
It was a straightforward, bleak film, unlike An Education, perhaps because of it setting.Even though I won't rave about this film, I'm glad I saw it. I like "bleak." |

Once I found out who wrote the screenplay for An Education - Nick Hornby (one of my favorite authors and screenwriters) - and read the praise out here, I put it on my list of must watch before both the Blanches and Oscars. |

An Education seems unlikely to win, yet being among the contenders was enough for Hornby, who said: “I am thrilled and proud to be an Oscar nominee. It almost makes up for Arsenal’s dismal performance on Sunday.”
Arsenal were tonked 3-1 by Premiership rivals Manchester United. |
