Catherine Deneuve is very good in A Christmas Tale, a 150 minute saga about a large family which is full of feuds, some bitter others goofy. Catherine Deneuve's real life daughter has a meaty role in it. She looks strikingly like her father Marcello Mastroianni.

(500) Days of Summer is an Annie Hall for the 21st century, so I highly recommend it for fans of the latter. Unfortunately, I'm not a fan of Annie Hall and (500) Days of Summer annoyed me in many of the same ways. Still, both are good examples of people going over where their love went wrong, and this one is very well made. It also reminded me a bit of Definitely Maybe, which I like better than both films.
Things I did like: Zooey Deschanel's eyes (the filmmakers did all they could do to get you to fall into them), a musical number set to Hall and Oates "You Make My Dreams," a song that generally makes me go ehh, but which fits in well here, the soundtrack in general, Summer's apartment (with a clever homage to Magritte), our hero's recovery, and especially the last scene, which is perfect and does a lot to redeem what has come before. I also liked the basic form of the movie; the days are not presented in chronological order, but you get a helpful title which informs you this is day 256, day 37, or day 500. It also gives it a bit of an "Endless Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" flavor.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt seems to be turning into John Cusack in this film, or maybe they're both turning into Dustin Hoffman. The shot where Tom sees Summer naked on his bed is such an obvious reference to The Graduate that I had to laugh. It's totally appropriate, too. To emphasize this, Tom and Summer go to see The Graduate later in the film. There are many references to other films, including, I swear, Enchanted.
Love the soundtrack to the film. I would change my Blanche nominations but I'm afraid Mirgun might figure out where I live. |

I agree with all the positives in Syd's review of DDoS and none of the negatives. I liked it quite a bit better than Annie Hall but agree that it's very similar. I've always loved "You Make My Dreams" anyway, so the number based on it (which is also the Enchanted reference) made me kvell. |

Geez, I'm gonna have to rent that film again. Warning: Don't watch movies right before you're going to sleep. |

Food, Inc. is a severe indictment of the food industry and is based on the works of two authors who are well known for their appearances on television and who again make several appearances in this documentary, Eric Schlosser and Michael Pollan. Educative and eye-opening.

Just caught Outrage, the 2009 documentary by Kirby Dick about closeted gay politicians who vote against gay rights bills. "Out Rage": get the double meaning? It's strong and pretty shocking, though little of it registers as totally new to a person who has been keeping abreast of the subject. Talking heads and video clips document the jaw-dropping hypocrisy of such as Larry Craig and Charlie Crist. It's funny, too, but not really funny. Gets a Blanche nom from me.
By contrast, Food Inc. tells an old story in a very dry fashion (albeit well photographed) and doesn't make my cut. |

I saw Outrage in the theatre. Charlie Crist, governor of Florida, potential Republican candidate for President. Hypocrisy rules. |

TWO LOVERS is an excellent film with an Oscar caliber performance by Joaquin Phoenix. |

I saw Outrage on HBO. I was surprised to see many of those politicians identified as being gay. I am also not sure whether a politician remaining closeted is a hypocrite or a realist. Granted that in some regions of the country it may not be a problem, but in other regions it may be a career killer.

Marc - I'm so glad you liked it. I saw that you gave Pheonix a nomination for it. I probably will do the same. He really was that good. |

The bad thing is being gay and because you are closeted voting against gay rights. Being closeted is okay but being hypocritical is not. |

And Crist married a woman to seal his election. Not good. |

Just saw about the last twenty minutes of the Brosnan/Rene Russo version of The Thomas Crown Affair. Boy did it look like crap. And Russo was dreadful, but Brosnan was just semi-dreadful. I'm going to see who directed it. |
