Wade,

I did see Brokeback Mountain. I wrote a review here. I'll try to dig it up.

Wade, give Snow Cake a try. Billy thought it was mediocre and I thought it was excellent. I think you'll like it.

People on here rarely see movies that I recommend that don't have a good rep. GI Joe is very entertaining and Ghost of Girlfriends Past is very funny and touching.

I will be seeing Broken Embraces. Pedro is Marta's favourite director and she sees all his movies, so I will see it in Spanish. I did see a lot of movies in French when I lived in France and it was OK, but my French is light years ahead of my Spanish and my French ain't so hot.

No, and I want to, quite. Also Tetro. The Baroque Violinist is about to get his (astonishingly nimble) hands on a European release print of the former, an Aclademy screener of the latter, and is planning a Franco-Argentinian, Provost/Coppola-helmed, artistically skewed double bill on his really big....screen.

Kathryn Bigelow becomes the first woman to win a Directors Guild Award.

It is the first Directors Guild of America win for the 58-year-old filmmaker and the first time a woman has won the award.

Woohoo, hoorah, hopla. Racso awaits.

Winter's Bone takes the grand jury prize for drama at Sundance:

Writer/director Debra Granik's mystery-tinged tale also receives prestigious screenwriting award. The U.S. documentary prize goes to 'Restrepo' and the world category winner is 'Animal Kingdom.'

Can I come?

Tetro has been totally overlooked.........and it's my favorite film of the year.

That an amazing film like Tetro, directed by no less than Francis Ford Coppola, could have become lost in the shuffle is a terrible disappointment.

Also ironic that no film released in the Autumn/Winter award zone is grabbing all the buzz. The Hurt Locker was, I believe, a Summer film.

Oh yeah, and following up on Billy, Inla and Syd's comments about Terrence Malick, I am a confirmed fan. All his films are gorgeously shot, but much more important is the equally rich story he allows to develop and gel. No cliches, no templates you've seen a thousand times before, Malick's films are long but deliciously satisfying. The guy serves a frickin' Italian wedding's worth of cinematic food - a multicourse meal of talk and action - and if you have the appetite for it you'll leave the theatre smiling.

I loved The New World and The Thin Red Line (though I concede Billy's point about Travolta's shit stain of a performance), and stand by my review, in the review forum, which I wrote after seeing it a second time years later.

Yeah the hushed voice overs in TTRL saying the same maudlin things over and over....man destroys man, but nature goes on....war is hell...Really? That indeed a revelation.

Rich story? What story? Sure it has some sumptuous visuals, but it's just lipstick on a pig.

Yeah, and Casablanca is just, "I'm Mr. Tough on the outside but hurting on the inside", the same maudlin self-sacrifice crap. And The Godfather is just, "Michael, don't go into the family business, Michael, PLEASE don't go into the family business, okay Michael, go into the fucking family business and see what happens", the same old cliche of the mob sucking you into its vortex of power and violence.

See, that's me making a point about how easy it is to reduce anything down to its humdrum DNA.

We ain't getting into another debate over TTRL on a Sunday night, but if you honestly want my take on the story (and yes, I do consider it an epic and great story), read my review on the Film Review forum.

The Directors Guild of America on Saturday night named Kathryn Bigelow best director of 2009 for "The Hurt Locker."

Not only is it the first guild win for the 58-year-old filmmaker, it is the first time a woman has won the award.
