Wade, I am thrilled for you but sad to hear about the S man's mother. Please offer him my condolences. |

wadehle, echoing everyone's congrats and condolences. Candles lit.
Am ready for the Gilded Globules, and that Awards Circuit round-up is probably most prophetic, although, not being in direct contention with each other and therefore no chance of tying as at the Broadcast Film Critics ceremony, Mrs. Gummer and Ms. Bullock are unlikely to liplock (which has had Tinseltown aBuzz all weekend). Mainly, am interested in just how outrageous Ricky Gervais will become and what the teevee picks reveal.
Frankly, am just hoping Mr. Gervais goes for it because I saw A Single Man last night, and desperately need some yoks and good times. To resort to liberal understatement, it devastated me on the deepest conceivable levels. The treasured friend who knowingly accompanied me to it insisted on going for a drink afterwards, keeping me just benumbed enough to staunch the waterworks (which began fairly early into the film) to a slow misty drip. My eyes look like Roma tomatoes toting designer luggage today. Cannot imagine that it will affect others so profoundly, it's extremely austere, removed and arty, nor will it likely be everyone's cup of moody gorgeousness. The Hitchcock, Wong and Almodóvar riffs, allusions and/or similarities will probably distract/offput as many people as they affect/rivet. No offense, but couldn't care less. Colin Firth instantly vaults past every single actor in my stuffed pre-Blanche roster, barring the still-unseen Jeff Bridges, to top the herd-- such deeply moving, unwaveringly inhabited, camera-carrying subtlety warrants comparisons to Michael Redgrave in The Browning Version, except it's really in a class all its own, and press reactions have still been less than he merits. Ditto La Belle Julianne, marvelously louche, edgy and vulnerable at once -- an aging Holly Golightly gone Brit-chick-chic-with-a-gin-glass, her Twist scene beyond praise -- and the three dissimilar (save for their beauty) men in the title character's orbit, remembered or otherwise, did exactly what was required of them. Speaking of twists, the ending, which makes the most specific leap in tone of the various expansions in tone from Christopher Isherwood's source novel, emphatically struck the lanced hole where my heart used to be and sent it crashing to the floor. Have no idea if Tom Ford can direct other properties with anything like this much style, intent or singular purpose, but I fervently hope so. Oh, George. Oh, Jim. Oh. My. God. Unmissable. |

Thanks, whiskeypriest, I so needed that.
Yes, to put it mildly, though for reasons entirely, subjectively personal, and, again, I cannot expect it to affect anyone else so profoundly, but it did me in. |

Thanks again, y'all.
W...O...W...
I had a feeling it was going to be good but stellar reviews from both hippster and inla? Trying to talk the S-man into seeing it tomorrow.
I watched It's Complicated (which, ironically, wasn't very much so) and was underwhelmed. It's something about that Nancy Ephron type of writing that just screeches anything bearing reality to a halt with me. It's a cute movie, actually, but there are far, FAR bigger fishes to fry and show off on the pier this year.
I started The Fantastic Mr. Fox (sort of a NOTHER double Meryl feature) and was completely digging it but couldn't stay awake and found it best to start over again. . . maybe after the Globes while I'm sure I'll be wide awake. |

wadehle, dollink, cannot predict whether you will find it as potent, it's an extremely specialized, wholly singular work, but I think it needs to be seen. Given the recent loss, would advise packing Kleenex. Just saying.
Am at last going to catch Mr. Fox next week, provided my eyeballs return to normal shades. Crazy Heart and Broken Embraces screenifiers are en route. |

I empathize, Inla. |

Well, he isn't likely to do more than a nom at that other, er, film society, and am quite sure Mr. Bridges is every bit as great and meritorious as all say he is and the clips portend -- nevertheless, Mr. Firth grabbed me where I live, eliciting recognition/recollective experiential jolts that had me sitting in a pool of my own tears. The friend who accompanied me was absolutely on-target about the need for some grounding afterwards. |

Colin is connecting mightily with gay men in the same way Bridges is connecting with 50-something hetero men. Both actors are playing characters who are self-destructing because of past losses. Right now, according to the posts on Facebook, Bridges is also connecting with women big time. I find it encouraging that Jeff, overweight and rough around the edges, is a heartthrob for a lot of ladies. Makes me feel less self-conscious about my beer gut. |

While watching Crazy Heart I wanted to get away from Jeff. He did not play a desirable character physically. But I am ready to buy the cd. (I think it came out today.) Whereas Colin took me with him. One difference.....we know Colin isn't gay. But it felt like Jeff was the drunk character he played. |
