Billy,

of course, I meant Quintet. I agree it sucks. But, it does contain snow.

"Quartet" had Alan Bates and Maggie Smith. Still wasn't very good, though.

There was a muuuuch earlier Quartet which was four Somerset Maughm short stories and was very good. British. 1950s.

I saw it and liked it very much. Watched it in Winnipeg Beach way back in the 50's. I am having trouble remembering the stories though. Was one about a couple who were trapeze artists in a circus?

Yep. We're dating ourselves, but in a good way.

I just checked it out and thanks to remembering that Glynis Johns was the trapeze artist I found out that the movie I was thinking of was Encore 1952 (three Maugham short stories) and she wasn't a trapeze artist but a performer who did high dives into a flaming pool of water. I had also seen Quartet in Winnipeg Beach but it must have been earlier as it was made in 1948. Reading the synopses of these two films made me remember all the stories. I even remember the preview for Quartet where Maugham sitting in his garden tells about the upcoming film.

The new New Yorker has a hilarious movie-oriented article by Woody Allen. I was surprised to find that it's available on the website already. Here's hoping this link works.

Saw Avatar in imax 3-D. Impressive but quite an assault on the senses.

One man's assault is another man's treat. Avatar is a great movie.

It is. But it is also a major assault on the senses for 2 hours and 40 minutes.

I got nauseous after a couple hours - despite really enjoying the film. I guess I have a limit when it comes to 3-D

"Assault" seems negative to me. I found Avatar immersive.

Intense is a word that can be both positive and negative, depending on the use of the word for the situation.

I found everything about Avatar's technical end to be without flaw. The only criticism I had of the movie is that the story is a little cliched. Otherwise it was aces, and certainly one of my Blanche nominees for Best Picture.
