I recall smoking in Pearl Harbor, left by my feet as I raced out of the cinema at record speed.

Its cannabis-usage-induced rating has gotten many Whollyweird peeps rolling their eyes even as they roll their own, in part, I suspect, because of the city council and city attorney's politically-motivated back-and-forth assault on each other via medical marijuana clinics -- a highly charged subject in the City of Angles at present. Whatever -- that sequence, particularly Mrs. Gummer's fluctuating giggle-levels and Steve Martin's inability to fully open his eyes, made me whoop more than once. It hardly seemed an endorsement of the substance, a passing (or is that passing the spliff?) comedic plot device at most. The MPAA is so peculiar.

PGA noms are out, stretched to 10 contenders in conjunction with AMPAS. More or less, they probably auger that other, um, film society's choices for top pic pix come Feb. 2:

| I'm not sure if it's screener overload, but An Education seems a really slight film to me -- to be even mentioned with some of the others. Sure the lead is cute as a button and borderline divine, Saarsgaard is hott, Cooper is hotter, Molina's a caricature to be sure, he even looks comic-ish. I dunno, sad actually because I love this time in the London 60s but it's not grabbing me, I want to put other's in and let it wang-dang-doodle all by itself. But, I only have 30 minutes more to go and suppose I ought to complete it. |

| I agree with ehle, at least to the point that I think An Education has been slightly oversold as our introduction to The Next Big Thing (Carey Mulligan). |

That's mighty strange. No Slap Shot for sure. But of course the Yankee hockey team had to be clean cut and clean living. How else could they have beaten the Godless Ruskies? Of course Canuck hockey players never drink or swear unless they are awake. |

Weighing in here: Alec Baldwin looked just fine to me. The more black hair, the merrier (imho) and he was a solid large. On the other hand Jeff Bridge's white and flabby chest had NO appeal for me.
Because pot had a negative effect on me (27 years ago......) that whole business didn't do much for me.......other than imply that it's the bees knees for the over 50 crowd. |

True, I loved it. I thought it was going to be like Spinal Tap but I was wrong. It's not a metal documentary either but a film about life , friendship , the hardships of what we go through doing something we love, perseverance. I highly recommend it also. |

bullshit. Mulligan has not been oversold. Nine has been oversold. Carey is getting much deserved recognition for a beautifully nuanced performance. Yes, she has star quality and hopefully she'll use it wisely. |

| I thought Baldwin looked pretty good sans clothes, but what was really amusing was his total self-assurance about his nudity--as opposed to Streep, who was so anxious about being seen naked. Very true to male and female attitudes, I think. |
