It looks like my next will be The Princess and the Frog and either Invictus or Brothers. We don't have An Education or Bad Lieutenant yet.

The previews I saw of Avatar make it look terrible. Maybe it is going to be the reverse of my experience with TTRL.

Something in me (because of the poisonous personality of James Cameron) wants Avatar to be terrible. But it probably isn't.

It looks visually excellent. Cameron's movies get expensive but he also uses the money to good effect. I've liked all the movies he's directed dating back to The Terminator, except for a documentary. He also wrote Strange Days, which I like a lot despite Juliette Lewis.

I got a ticket to see it next Thursday at midnight.

Wow. 100%. I guess I'm going to need to see it opening weekend.

His 1997 acceptance speech for Titanic was evidence enough that he's a Class A asshole. But the (theoretically hearsay but obviously 99% true) story of his relationship with Linda Hamilton is revolting. If you haven't heard about it suffice it to say he treated her shamefully.

Hamilton is actually on decent terms with Cameron and considers him a crap partner/husband but a devoted father to their child. Her bottom line is: In the end, it was an eight-month marriage, and he went off with someone who’s much better suited to him,” Hamilton said. They divorced, and Cameron and Amis married shortly thereafter.

For all the gory details and an article on Cameron which made me think "yeah, he's a schmuck, but a talented and driven one" -

Cameron seems nervous and the "king of the world" shout at the end is geeky, but I don't see anything in this that makes him an asshole.

You're right. Didn't he win another Oscar that night which he accepted with much less modesty? If not, I'm wrong, wrong, wrong.

Billy, Cameron did get a lot of heat for his best director speech, but it seems unwarranted. People found the "I'm the king of the world" kind of cloying. But, so what. In that moment, he was the king of the world and he was celebrating a memorable line from his film. Sour grapes, methinks.

well, this may be the offending moment. Cameron seems edgy, like he' coked up, clicking his fingers, working his jaw, agitated. The few moments of silence thing lacks genuine sincerity, to me. There is something about Cameron that is off-putting. But, he's a director of movies, not a saint.

Marc--Thanks. Yes, that was it. I find him more than off-putting. I find him absolutely nauseating. He doesn't have to be a saint. But it would be nice to be a lot less holier-than-thou. "That's about all Gil Cates can stand." The subtext being, "Gil Cates doesn't have the soul and the sympathetic heart that I do." Yecch.
