Quote: It's not so much that The Road was awful as that it didn't really justify its having been made.
I read the book and was not inspired. Dreary to the extreme. And the father always reassuring the son. Why eat rusty nails?
The more I think about Precious, the more I want to see it again. Lenny Kravitz had a role. Mariah Carey had a role. (I would never have guessed she was the social worker.) I'm going to check out the director's other movie Shadowboxer. |

Anyone see The Time Traveller's Wife? I might see it this afternoon. Checked some comments on IMDB and they were pretty favourable. |

I could see Twilight II so I'd have another movie to talk about in the Movies I Hate forum. |

I always knew Eric Bana was very cool. |

Billy,
I give credit to the author of The Time Traveler,s Wife, Audrey Niffenegger. She went to school in Chicago. Radio station WXRT in Chicago (one of the great FM rock stations) played the shit out of my albums when they were released. In fact, they still do. One of my songs "Home Of The Brave" is one of the most requested songs on the station and has been for almost 25 years.
Niffenegger was probably a listener, thus she included my band in her book |

Great. Is it mentioned in the movie as well? |

Billy, I haven't seen the movie. I wouldn't have known about the mention in the book if my father hadn't brought it to my attention. He read The Time Traveler's Wife. Which surprised me. Not his kind of book. But, he liked it. |

Too late guys. I saw the movie already. It's not a bad movie but it's not all that good either. A lot of the comments about the movie wondered how the book could have been made into a movie. Most of them said that the book was much better but the movie was a decent attempt though the book had a lot more to it. Which doesn't surprise me because the movie didn't have much to it. Bana gives a pretty flat performance and the female lead is just about as shallow. The movie has a few touching moments but the movie and the characters really lack any depth. The children in the movie are much more interesting than the adults.
I didn't hear The Nails mentioned, but according to the comments there were a lot of characters in the book who had tiny roles or no role at all. Probably one of them was the Nails fan. |

This would be presumably the Bana character or the wife (Rachel McAdams). The movie sounds unwatchable even though I really, really like Bana when he's on. (As in Funny People and Munich and Lucky You.) |

I wouldn't call it unwatchable but it didn't find it entertaining. |

I hated The Time Traveller's Wife, just hated it. I thought Eric Bana was terrible, like a piece of wood - and I like him, so it was very disappointing. Rachel M faired only slightly better. Now, the book is one of my favorites, ever - so I am sure that influenced my feelings for the movie. |

Kate, I teetered between boredom and hate. I can definitely understand someone hating it, especially if they have read the book and really liked it. |

An Education is a charming and trenchant film about a young girl in 1961 England, on her way to an Oxford education, who meets up with a charming older man and gets sidetracked. The girl is played by a wonderful new actress named Carey Mulligan, the older man is Peter Sarsgaard, the girl's father is Alfred Molina, and they're all great. The movie is not earth-shattering but it's very entertaining and extraordinarily well acted. It also nails the time period both in exterior details and in attitudes.
Smaller supporting roles are played expertly by Emma Thompson and Olivia Williams. Thompson is a foolish, borderline evil school head, and it's interesting to see Thompson play this kind of unredeemedly nasty sort. Williams is a much nicer schoolmarm. She's a fine actress seen much too little since Rushmore and The Sixth Sense. |

Glad you saw this, Billy........I liked it alot, too. It was especially fun to watch Alfred Molina's over-stated performance. He also was taken in by Sarsgaard......and his transformation was interesting to watch. |
