I don't remember a Coen forum either. I don't remember any forum with Jewish directors. Laughing

Billy Wilder?

I saw The Boy Friend when it came out. I don't know if it was the full version or whatever. Tommy Tune almost kept me in the theatre but a series of silly mugging close-ups, with nonsense dialogue, did it for me. It was one of the few things my ex and I agreed on.

Flicking through the channels I came across Tommy, a few years ago. It must have been around the middle. I didn't know who directed it and watched for about 25 minutes. What a dumb mess of nothing. I thought, "This has to be Ken Russell." I was certainly not surprised to find out I was right.

TOMMY is awful. I do like LAIR OF THE WHITE WORM, WHORE, ALTERED STATES, THE DEVILS.

Haven't seen Lair or Devils. Altered States is not a favorite of mine, but it's okay. Tommy is indeed execrable.

How about Listzomania? Looked like Tommy II.

I've seen Altered States. It's so forgettable that I've forgotten it.

ALTERED STATES features some genuinely psychedelic imagery.

I like Tommy, particularly Tina Turner as the Acid Queen. Though the whole sequence suggests Russell didn't actually know what acid was (what's with the syringes?). I like quite a bit of the music better than how it's played on the original concept album, and some of the lyrics are improvements.

But having said that, it's kitsch.

Just saw this. A comp class. I teach on MW. Three hour-and-a-half classes back to back. Fun.

It's a weird sequence where she turns into a robot, opens up, and Daltry goes inside. It closes, there are syringes all around it, and they go in. Makes no sense. Looks really cool.

Blurb from an upcoming Tsai Ming-Liang retrospective:

Quote:
The Hole (1998 / 95 min)

Taipei is plagued by a millennial endemic that causes people to behave like cockroaches. A few residents of an apartment complex have refused to evacuate. A man and a woman are connected by a hole between their apartments formed by an unending water leak. Occasional outbursts of surreal musical numbers break the silence between them and reveal suppressed desires.

Kewl!
(in a crazy sort of way)

Capitalism: A Love Story is a sustained attack on Wall Street and against deregulation. Most of the stories in it are well selected and their presentation is not too slanted. Moore may be doing some wishful thinking when he sees isolated protests as signs of collapse of capitalism. Showing a video of FDR delivering a speech describing his Second Bill of Rights is effective.
