| I watched Cheri yesterday and was sorely disappointed. I think the main problem was the utter lack of chemistry between the leads - Michelle Pfeiffer and Rupert Friend. Of the course the story really didn't help. There isn't any depth or interesting quirks to Friend's character Cheri. Pffeifer's character is almost equally blah. Friend is certainly nice enough to look . Funny enough Friend had tremendous chemistry with the actress Joan Plowright (age 80) in Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont which provided a much tastier look at cross generational relationships (albeit not really a romantic one). Friend can be charming and I reccomend that film over this very Limp one. |

| There's something about those older women/younger men themes, I find almost embarrassing. I don't know why but it gives me the willies. And as much as I love Michelle Pfieffer, I'll probably wait awhile on Cheri. By that time her new movie with love interest Ashton Kusher should be on DVD anyway. |

And after quick googling, I ran across this site with 24 minutes of Noel Coward's home movies, including snippets in Shanghai. With musical accompaniment -- a nice way to listen to some Noel Coward singing his songs.

It's from his Asian tour 1929-30 after he collapsed in NY, rested in Hawaii and then went touring around Asia. And more up through 1932. I haven't actually had time to watch all but a minute or two.
[Edit: it begins with still photos dissolving into each other, and then the home movies begin around the 2 minute mark]
Gromit: I watched this last night and plan to watch it again later today. It's wonderful. And it reminded me of the show "High Spirits."
Joe: If you've never heard this score, I highly recommend it. If I still owned it, I'd send it to you. But this is a "Joe" score if there ever was one.
The play was directed by Coward and there are many who believe he wrote a lot of the lyrics. I do. He just never took the credit. I'm sure there's some kind of juicy story behind the whole thing. Maybe Billy knows? |

I know of High Spirits but have never heard or seen it. Thanks for the recommendation, Marj. You would know a "Joe" score if anyone would! Will make a purchase at Amazon.
And thanks for the link, Gromit. The images are hautining. A world gone by. And the songs are wonderful. |

| High Spirits is definitely a Joe score. "Home Sweet Heaven" is a great number. |

| Goodbye Solo is a film I experienced with my heart rather than my head. It is certainly one of the best films of the year. |

I never heard that rumor about Coward writing some of the score. He was not always on the money as a songwriter. The score to The Girl Who Came to Supper was pretty lame with the exception of the Tessie O'Shea medley. |

Billy, it's one of those rumors, I've been hearing for years. Don't know where it started or how much truth there is to it, but when I listened to the lyrics on Gromit's link last night, it sure sounded like him. And I love thinking that he had to have written for Beatrice Lilly. Even if he just doctored the lyrics, it's fine with me.
You're right. He often messes up. And I've never heard The Girl Who Came to Supper. Now, I've gotta go find it. |

I found it an interesting film......The pacing/editing/time ahead/time back added to the reflective quality of the film......plus the music. If Glen Kenny was Chris, the boyfriend I wasn't particularly fond of him. It was Sasha Grey that had my attention: beautiful, warm but witholding, girl-next-doorish, hopeful, accepting, just hanging on. From a woman's viewpoint.....reflective/it makes you think and lingers.
I have to go back and find Tim. I heard him but was away from the tv when he came on. |

However - she an Paul Rudd had somethibg nice in a a direct to video flick I could never be your woman. I think May december rommance can be delightful to watch on the big screen when the characters have sufficient chemistry (physical, intellectual, etc)
I really liked Uma Thurman and Brian Greenberg in Prime |
