Whiskey -- Good to know. I need to see it again but it never came across as a film made from a novel. And back then, many that did were pretty obvious. Not to say it still doesn't happen but, well, I think you know what I mean.
This is one film I wish I owned. |

| I remember reading "This Gun for Hire" as a teenager and loving it. Then I saw the movie on TV and it was a disappointment. (How could they cast Alan Ladd as Raven? That was like casting Mel Gibson as Quasimodo.) But "The Third Man" is a truly great film--perfect cast, among other things. |

Obviously, I revere Greene, my second favorite 20th Century author* - I'm a guy, we make lists - but I have to note the things that really elevate The Third Man came from other sources: the style, the score, the cinematography, Vienna itself, and especially the ending, which Greene did not like and Reed insisted on. And the best line was written by Orson Welles.
I'm told Gun For Hire works quite well as a noir divorced from the idea of the novel. I've never seen it, but it did make Ladd a star.
* Because John Shade was taken as an NYT screen name and Charles Kinbote just wouldn't do. |

Anyway, back to a current film, I must say I really hate the poster for Hurt Locker. Not that it isn't excellent from an aesthetic standpoint, but that's a great scene that loses a bit when you've already seen the reveal.
Old lady behind me at that scene: "Oh, FUCK!" |

| We have Moon showing here on one screen, only in the evening, so I'll try to get Thursday night off to see it. I'm surprised it's here at all. They must have booked it for the Apollo 11 anniversary. The only other local theatre that's showing it is the 24-screen 40 miles away that often has things the other theatres don't. |

| The Third man will always be my favorite film no matter what. My family went to see it when I was six, and its magic has never left me. My brother and I wore out that Anton Karas record. Every single scene has been inside me ever since. I read the book years ago. While enjoyable on its own merits, it might as well have been any other book. The film defies comparison with Greene himself or any other artist. It stands alone as my strongest bond with art. |

To be honest, I think one may not even realize what scene that is from seeing the poster, so I don't think anything is really spoiled. |
