I saw clips and the preview for Hurt Locker. It doesn't fit into the type of movie that appeals to me.....war, action, all men.....but I may see it eventually.

It's not "my kind of movie," either. But it's definitely my favorite movie in years.

PUBLIC ENEMIES is getting both raves and lukewarm reviews. No in-betweens.
I'll be seeing it tomorrow.

A critic up here gave Public Enemies a lukewarm review. She said, basically, that it could have been a great movie but the director threw too much into it and didn't seem to want to edit any scene with some just dragging on. She compared it to his movie Heat, and that's a movie that would fit her review of PE. That has me giving her review credence.

A lukewarm review is an in-between. What do you consider a bad review?

If it's anywhere near as bad as Heat, it's a must to avoid. Heat is one of the worst of all time.

And if it hadn't sunk earlier, that sappy endlessly drawn out last scene would have done the trick.

I just read Manohla's rave review of Public Enemies and he praises everything that the reviewer I mentioned earlier, criticizes. On top of that he compares it with Seven in some ways, in the form as a compliment, which I'm sure everyone on here knows that I detested. Peter Travers gives it a rave. Of course I haven't seen the movie but there is a lot of evidence piling up that has me thinking I won't like it.

There seems to be a consensus that the performances are good.

Manohla Dargis is a woman, and I am to her reviews the way Marantz is to Peter Travers's--that is, if she likes something I am almost sure to dislike it, and vice versa. Synecdoche, New York, which she adored, was IMO completely unbearable.

Therefore, I will probably be skipping Public Enemies. Will see it on DVD, though.

I may have mentioned this at the time, but a reviewer on the radio here (I forget which one it was, maybe Gillmor), used that exact description of her/his experience watching the movie.

okay billy. When critics from papers like NY Times and Village voice are calling PUBLIC ENEMIES a masterpiece or one of the best movies in years, I guess a lukewarm review qualifies as bad.

I've never found Johnny Depp interesting. Never saw a movie because he was in it.

Thank you! At last, someone who feels the same way I do. He's okay, nothing more, nothing less, except in Ed Wood, where he was terrific.

He was good in Ed Wood. I think he was good in the first Pirates movie. But

pretty much sums up his career for me, too.

For what it's worth, you're in the vast majority. For me, the emperor is not nude, just sort of in cutoffs and a T-shirt.

Two of my favourite actors are a little off centre. Depp and Downey Jr. maybe I just like "D's".
